About the Author
I came naturally by my yen to wander far places, physical, imaginary, and spiritual... -"Win Blevins" Win Blevins, of Cherokee, Irish and Welsh descent, is from a family that was on the move, always west. Win's childhood was spent roaming, his dad a railroad man. Win went to school in St. Louis, and the family spent summers in little towns along the tracks of the railroads. He listened to the whistles blow at night and wanted to go wherever the trains went.
Seldom has a young man been in more of a hurry. Using scholarships, Win ran through a succession of colleges, receiving his master's degree, with honors, in English from Columbia University. He taught at Purdue University and Franklin College, then received a fellowship to attend USC. Win became a newspaperman - a music, theater, and film critic for both major Los Angeles papers. In 1972 he took the big leap-he quit his job to write out his passions-exploring and learning wild places-full time. His greatest passion of all has been to set the stories of these places, their people and animals, colors and smells, into books.
Win climbed mountains for ten years. A fluke blizzard caught him on a mountaintop and froze his feet, an end to climbing mountains, but not to exploring them. He's rafted rivers in the west, particularly the Snake and the San Juan, and was briefly a river guide. His love of the great Yellowstone River gave him a fine appreciation for the people who first loved these wild places. Along the way, Win lost the use of his legs and learned to sail, deciding a boat was a good place for a man without legs. He regained the use of his legs, and maintains his love of the open seas.
His first book, "Give Your Heart to the Hawks", is still in print after thirty years. Other works include "Stone Song", a novel about Crazy Horse, for which he won the 1996 Mountains and Plains Booksellers Award and the 1996 Spur Award. He's written 15 books, including a Dictionary of the American West, numerous screenplays and magazine articles.
He lives quietly in the canyon country of Utah. His passions grow with time-his wife Meredith, the center of his life, their five kids and grandkids. Classical music, baseball, roaming red rock mesas in the astonishing countryside, playing music He considers himself blessed to be one of the people creating new stories about the west, and is proud to call himself a member of the world's oldest profession-storyteller.

No one captures the spirit of that the mountain man time and life better than Joe Meek. He was wild, fun, lived a big life, and had a great sense of humor! A true storyteller from an extraordinary time.

Extremely enjoyable read! Have read several stories of Joe Meek, but this time had the feeling I was listening to Joe himself. However, after turning page 265...I realized there was a volume two. So much yet untold. My volume two should arrive next week.

The best first-person account of the trapper era that I have read.

Amazing tales of a trapper who was there for a lot of the interesting action. You get a sense of the interactions among the fur companies, the various tribes, and their shifting alliances, the amazing endurance, resourcefulness, and also the callousness and brutality of these men. You do need to filter fact from tale, which the notes help with, but hearing a first person account is so much better than reading a dry history!

About the Author
Robert C. Solomon is Quincy Lee Centennial Professor at the University of Texas at Austin. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and has taught at Princeton University, the University of Pittsburgh, and the University of California. He is the author of FROM RATIONALISM TO EXISTENTIALISM (Harper & Row, 1972), THE PASSIONS (Doubleday, 1976), IN THE SPIRIT OF HEGEL (Oxford, 1983), ABOUT LOVE (Simon & Schuster, 1988), ETHICS AND EXCELLENCE (Oxford, 1992), NEW WORLD OF BUSINESS (Rowman & Littlefield, 1994), and A PASSION FOR WISDOM (Oxford, 1997), as well as a number of textbooks in general philosophy. He has won numerous awards for his teaching and has taught in the U.S., Canada, and Australia.

Clancy Martin is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at UMKC. He works on 19th and 20th Century European philosophy after Kant, the intersections of philosophy and literature, and the ethics of advertising and selling.

Clancy has authored, coauthored and edited several books in philosophy, including LOVE, LIES, AND MARRIAGE (forthcoming, Farrar Straus & Giroux), HONEST WORK (Oxford University Press, 2006) with Robert Solomon and Joanne Ciulla, and THE PHILOSOPHY OF DECEPTION (forthcoming, Oxford University Press). He has published over two dozen articles and reviews on Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Romanticism, and the virtue of truthfulness, and has also translated Nietzsche's THUS SPOKE ZARATHUSTRA (Barnes and Noble Classics, 2006) and is presently translating Nietzsche's BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL for Hackett. Clancy also publishes fiction in NOON, MCSWEENEYS, and elsewhere.

In 2007 his story "The Best Jeweler" won The Pushcart Prize, and his first novel HOW TO SELL is forthcoming from Farrar Straus and Giroux in 2009, and will appear simultaneously in French, German, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, and other languages.

Clancy earned his Ph.D. in 2003 from the University of Texas at Austin, where he wrote a dissertation on Nietzsche's theory of deception under the late Robert C. Solomon.

Inventing the Way of the Samurai examines the development of the 'way of the samurai' - bushido; - which is popularly viewed as a defining element of the Japanese national character and even the 'soul of Japan'. Rather than a continuation of ancient traditions, however, bushido; developed from a search for identity during Japan's modernization in the late nineteenth century. The former samurai class were widely viewed as a relic of a bygone age in the 1880s, and the first significant discussions of bushido at the end of the decade were strongly influenced by contemporary European ideals of gentlemen and chivalry. At the same time, Japanese thinkers increasingly looked to their own traditions in search of sources of national identity, and this process accelerated as national confidence grew with military victories over China and Russia.

Inventing the Way of the Samurai considers the people, events, and writings that drove the rapid growth of bushido, which came to emphasize martial virtues and absolute loyalty to the emperor. In the early twentieth century, bushido; became a core subject in civilian and military education, and was a key ideological pillar supporting the imperial state until its collapse in 1945. The close identification of bushido; with Japanese militarism meant that it was rejected immediately after the war, but different interpretations of bushido; were soon revived by both Japanese and foreign commentators seeking to explain Japan's past, present, and future. This volume further explores the factors behind the resurgence of bushido, which has proven resilient through 130 years of dramatic social, political, and cultural change.

About the Author

Oleg Benesch is Anniversary Research Lecturer in History, specializing in the history of early modern and modern Japan. Before arriving at the University of York, Dr Benesch was Past & Present Fellow at the Institute of Historical Research at the University of London. He has spent almost six years living and researching in Japan, including two years each at Hitotsubashi University and Reitaku University in Tokyo. Dr Benesch's publications and teaching interests cover a variety of fields, including Japanese intellectual, religious, and social history, Chinese intellectual history, as well as the transnational history of modern East Asia. He has presented his research findings at academic conferences and invited lectures throughout East Asia, Europe, North America, and Australia.

A remarkable piece of scholarship: this book is the most accurate, nuanced, and well researched examination of Bushido available. It clearly shows how the concept of Bushido has changed chronologically, rightly noting how nationalists, popular culture, and a lack of critical scholarship all affected how Bushido was portrayed and understood.

For the curious martial artists, amateur philosophers, and Japanese history buffs, this book will swipe the rug out from under you when you find out the truth about Bushido's history. It is an academic work though, so expect it to challenge you. It's not the kind of book you casually read before you go to bed. If you're looking for a broader understanding of the Samurai and their beliefs that's good but a lot easier to read you should get "When Buddhists Attack: The Curious Relationship between Zen and the Marial Arts" by Jeffery Mann instead of this book.

For the academics and those who are serious about cultivating a deeper understanding the way of the warrior: you need to read this book. If you can't afford it, call your library have them buy it. It's really good.

Still a Must-Read, Even After a Century and a Half.

Dozy's four volume masterpiece remains even today, after a century and a half, one of the most important histories ever written about Islamic Spain, and perhaps, the best ever. Dozy was a linguistic genius and even native Arabic writers usually agree that his knowledge of Arabic was flawless, so much so, that he was able to expose Conde's many errors.

The work takes us up to about the year eleven hundred, so it covers the history through the most important period. It unfortunately leaves out the last few centuries, but they are mostly important in regards to the Almohads, which were just another austere Berber tribe among many, and the later stages of the Reconquista. In the book, Dozy focuses heavily on two of history's greatest figures, Abd-er-Rahman III, and Almanzor, the latter of whom was a cross between Metternich, Bismarck, and Machiavelli. (This work was written in an era when historians were not under the restrictions of political correctness, which make some newer works published today practically worthless.)

There are three things to be aware of. The author has a very strong bias against Catholicism, which at times skews his presentation, but this is to be expected, as Dozy is descended from Protestant French Huguenots. Second, the translation from the original French seems to be from the same era as the original. The book is chock full of English words you have never seen, and won't ever again see. Third, the scanning was sloppily done, so patience is an absolute prerequisite. (And at only $0.99 hardly worth complaining about.)

Still, even with the above mentioned flaws, I still give it five stars for its importance to this subject cannot be overestimated. It is a must-read for anyone interested in delving deeply into Islamic Spain.

WARNING: This book is definitely not for neophytes, those with only a passing interest, or those with a short attention span.

A Fascinating History

Reinart Dozy was a brilliant scholar focusing on the Middle East, Islam and terms in those days an "orientalist" of the first order.
This excellent work in the history of Islam in Spain is the most thoroughly researched and insightful book you will read in the topic. It's insights will shatter some long held assumptions and bring to life the culture and history of Iberia. Read this book.

On May 28, 1849, at the height of the Ireland's Great Famine, over 500 people were cruelly evicted from the village of Toomevara, county Tipperary. Reports of the clearance spread far and wide, and its notoriety was such that it was discussed in the British House of Commons. The determination to clear the village was carried out with little regard for the welfare or survival of its inhabitants, and the conditions in which those who remained in the village found themselves in are difficult to comprehend in the present day. This publication is the first detailed study of the clearance. It examines Toomevara parish's experience throughout the years 1845-1851, with particular focus on the clearance and the events which followed. A wide variety of sources are referred to, from official Irish government records to local newspaper reports and local folk memory. Perhaps the saddest part of Toomevara's Famine history was the role some of its own people played in the suffering of their fellow parishioners in the period following the clearance, sparking a bitterness which remained in the social memory of the parish for generations.

Excellant book about a difficult time in Ireland. My family name has its origin in that part of Ireland, although I don't know if any of my ancesters actually came from Toomevara. Very well researched and detailed. The book comes alive with Ms. O'Brien's narrative of these sad events and highlights the strength of the survivors. Highly recommended.

The Sack of Toomevara - with some local folk involvement

This book is a worthy detailed record of the mass evictions in the 'Sack of Toomevara' that took place at the end of the Irish Famine (1845 - 1849) and sadly, how some of Toomevara's own local folk were involved in the dastedly acts inflicted on their own, the affects of which are still felt today within that community by those with connections to that event. Helen O'Brien is to be congratulated on her work as a job well done. This is an important contribution as a record for the future, as very little or nothing had been collated and penned on this, and it needed to be done.

Irish Famine or British genocide? The Answer is both.

It was well written and it answered my personal question as to whether my mother family's were hut tumblers . They were O' Mearas or O' Maras but they had moved to Limerick well before the Famine so they were not hut tumblers. It confirms the fact that the Brits were practicing genocide long before the Nazis.
