ADAM His Name Means “Of the Ground” His Work: Until his sin, Adam was naked and was the happy caretaker of the Garden of Eden. After succumbing to temptation, he tailored his own clothes and became a farmer. His Character: The first man, Adam, was initially God’s perfect human creation. Adam was in harmony with nature and with his wife, who was formed from one of his ribs. His Sorrow: More tragic than any story in the Bible, Adam disobeyed God, was expelled from the Garden of Eden, and spent the rest of his life in hard labor. His Triumph: Adam was the firstborn of all creation. Key Scriptures: Genesis 2–3 Monday HIS STORY “ What’s that sound?” The tension in Eve’s voice reflected the new feelings in Adam’s gut. His mind and heart swirled with sickening sen-sations, ones he wished he had never experienced, born of deepest guilt and the terror of truth. Until this moment, his life had been filled with remarkable delight. It all began when Adam took his first breath. The span of time between morning consciousness and gathering enough energy to open one’s eyes usually takes just a few moments. But for Adam, the prewaking experience of semiconsciousness must have taken some time. This was unlike anything that had ever happened before—or has happened since: a full-grown man literally sucking in his first gulp of air. As he lay somewhere between sleep and full consciousness, Adam’s first thoughts must have been, Who am I? What are those sounds? Where am I? What is this? Brushing the sleep from his eyes, accepting life, Adam slowly sat up. He looked down at his own legs and arms and saw smooth skin and firm, strong muscles. He lifted his hands to his face, bending and stretching his fingers, studying the sinews. He drew his hands closer and touched his face, feeling the contours of his eyes and cheekbones, then briefly to his hair, thick and long. Adam slowly stood to his feet. He tightened the muscles of his legs and stretched his new arms skyward. He drew in a deep breath of fresh, cool air that would rival a pristine, deep forest breath. And it was only then that Adam saw something of the breathtaking beauty that surrounded him. The foliage was lush, the flowers a panoply of color. The fully orchestrated sounds of songbirds and animals filled his head with sheer ecstasy. I am alive. He took another deep breath. Life is good. Adam began to walk. Slowly at first, then a jog, finally a dead run. Like a child turned loose, the man finally pulled up and spun around, his arms spread wide. He sang and shouted sounds from his own mouth, something he had never heard before. And if the sounds and the beauty and the wind tousling his hair were not enough to flood his senses, Adam felt an indescribable Presence. Yes, there were lots of living things around him, but this was different— an inexpressible Someone. All about him. Over there . . . over there . . . and over there. Whoever it was, Adam inherently knew that he was not the only one in the garden. Yet he was not afraid; instead, he was comforted by the Presence. Adam stopped in a small meadow, the soft grass cushioning his feet. The glowing yellow sun in the sky warmed his shoulders. He looked at the trees surrounding him and felt a vague emptiness in the pit of his stomach. And then, for the first time, Adam heard a voice, a sound different from the sound of any of the other living things around him. He heard words—a language that took shape and became immediate knowledge in his mind. The voice was quiet and authoritative, and he recognized it as belonging to the Presence. “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden,” the voice said, “but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.” Adam nodded his willing compliance. He had noted again the tree to his left and decided he was more than willing to obey. With all of this, he thought, looking all about, why would I miss the fruit of that tree? It’s an easy promise. Walking to a small bush covered with red fruit, Adam pulled a berry from a reluctant stem and tentatively bit into it. Juice covered his tongue and ran down his throat, tickling his mouth with a delightful sweet-tart sensation. Eagerly, he gathered others and shoved them into his mouth. Then from the woods and skies, animals and birds approached him. As though mysteriously commanded to organize, these living things passed by, and group by group, Adam called out their names. And once they were named, they scattered again. If ever a man experienced satisfaction by his surroundings, it was Adam. There was the invisible Presence, the creatures, the vegetation, and the fruit. But they weren’t enough. Deep in his soul, Adam longed for something—or someone—else by his side. “It is not good for you to be alone,” the voice spoke again. “I will make a helper suitable for you.” Adam sat down. The words warmed him. He knew that the Presence understood his longing. First a drowsiness, then a complete fatigue overwhelmed Adam. He laid his head on the soft grass and closed his eyes. In what seemed like a moment, he slowly opened his eyes, snatching consciousness from the mist of sleep. As his eyes took focus, he saw a form lying on the ground next to him. His heart raced at the beauty of the creature, like him in some ways, different in delightful other ways. Rising to his feet, Adam took the hand of the woman, helping her to stand. Their eyes met. They smiled and gently extended their arms toward each other until they embraced. Feeling the warmth of her body against his own, Adam nestled his face on the woman’s neck. And her presence filled the hollowness in his heart. A perfect companion.

Man's suffering for God's glory

WOW!
Here is a book that allows one to see how God can use anyone to do His work or pave His way. Having learned about these men as a child, Men of the Bible, allowed me to further relate to their sufferings and blessings. Men have been struggling with the same issues for centuries. What was their response to suffering and how their action plans all have allowed me to evaluate where I need to be as a follower of Christ.
If you are looking for a daily Bible study about 52 men that breaks down Their Story, A Look at the Man, His Legacy in Scripture, His Legacy of Promise and His Legacy of Prayer....Men of the Bible has been a tremendous tool in my spiritual growth.

Great 52 Week Men's Study

Highly recommend this book to any men's group that wants to take a look at the lessons we all can learn from a wide range of men in the Bible. You actually end up reading through the Bible as you study these 52 men since they are listed chronologically from Adam to Paul. Buy an extra one for your accountability partner and sharpen each other as you study these men together.

A good tool to help you use the Bible

I purchased this book for my husband, who is a new Christian. He is not very familiar with the Bible and found the idea of reading the Bible very daunting. I've had this book's counter part, "Women of the Bible" for a long time and have really enjoyed it. My husband loves Men of the Bible, he has found it very helpful in helping him understand the Bible and how it relates to our everyday life. This is a great devotional tool.

According to this droll mock-biography, whimsically set in the 1780s, would-be aviator Captain Arsenio "had little knowledge of physics or mechanics,... he demonstrated great patience and determination" in his quest for flight. Mixed-media collages picture Arsenio with an egg-shaped head and toothy underbite, dressed in a thin leather helmet, slack gray coat and patched olive-drab pants; his sepia-inked sketchbook mimics Leonardo da Vinci's. The narration alternates between a deadpan retrospective voice ("He placed so much emphasis on getting off the ground that he forgot... how to keep himself in the air") and excerpts from Arsenio's gung-ho Flight Diary: "Running + wings = access to heaven. It cannot fail!" The book recalls six doomed experiments; from the Motocanary ("If I concentrate enough birds together, the sustaining force will help me win the clouds. It cannot fail!") to the wooden, hydrogen-powered Aerial Submarine ("I'm still climbing upward, but I can smell something burning"). Argentinian author-artist Bernasconi, a pilot himself, creates multi-stage diagrams to document Arsenio's flights, from takeoff to ascent to maximum height and crash-landing. The reiterated "It cannot fail!" and slapstick outcomes yield a cumulative hilarity, and the Captain's quixotic optimism is endearingly loony. Grade 3-5-Bernasconi documents the exploits of an imaginary 18th-century experimental aviator, Captain Arsenio, explaining that the book's diagrams and quotations have been extracted from the inventor's diary. Six failed attempts to fly are described, including such innovations as the bird-powered Motocanary and the highly combustible Aerial Submarine. Each contraption is introduced with a brief paragraph of text, a large illustration, and a quotation. On the following spread, in a "Flight Diary," Arsenio details step by step how he operates that particular machine, becomes briefly airborne, and then inevitably falls to the ground. The collage artwork, which incorporates mostly metallic found objects such as springs and spoked wheels, features the determined but hapless adventurer rising and crashing in one spectacular disaster after another. Undaunted, he continues to proclaim that his next attempt "cannot fail." Rube Goldberg fanciers may be intrigued by these attempts and might even be inspired to sketch some of their own alternatives. Sublimely ridiculous

Want to make a kid laugh? Read this book together. To quote the amazing and amazingly inept (though highly persistent) Captain Arsenio, "It cannot fail!" 18th century aeronaut-wannabe, Captain Arsenio, gives us a wonderful first-hand view of his inventions and logic. Quirky art and a slapstick sense of humor with a dry, yet over the top, delivery makes for a great story that stands up well to multiple readings.

The delightful inventions and (mis)adventures of Captain Arsenio

Leonardo da Vinci has nothing on Captain Arsenio, a retired cheese maker, blacksmith, scuba diver, and ship captain turned inventor, who decided one day in 1782 to build a flying machine. Captain Arsenio was a curious man who liked to tinker and explore, and the fact that he worked with a hodgepodge of materials and was totally unaware of the laws of physics were not account to get in the way of a man who sets off to fly with the birds (in spite of himself). In this delightful book we learn about his long series of eccentric projects in this quest.

"Captain Arsenio: Inventions and (Mis)adventures in Flight" by Pablo Bernasconi purports to be based on pages from the recently discovered of Captain Manual J. Arsenio, in which were recorded his many failed attempts to create a flying machine. Of course, this is all fiction, which probably explains why it the book ends up being so much fun. Bernasconi tells Arsenio's story, starting in the 1780s with the Motocanary and the Flying Runner, then progressing to the Corkscrewpterus, Aerial Submarine, Illusion Burner, and Hamstertronic. These are six of his eighteen most influential projects that have contributed to modern aviation by virtue of teaching that most valuable of lessons, "Don't try this at home." For each of his flying machines we have the details of the project (e.g., the Motocanary involves tying sixteen canaries to a belt), including diagrams and sketches, followed by Arsenio's Flight Diary which details the specific phases of the attempt and the lessons learned (e.g., choose more obedient bird, test the design in a field without any trees, etc.).

Bernasconi's artwork consists of collaged original art and found objects, and if it does not remind you of a cross between Rube Goldberg's inventions and Terry Gilliam's animation for Monty Python, then you are a whole lot younger than I am. Young readers will be delighted by the (mis)adventures of Captain Arsenio and captivated by the various designs and Beransconi's artistic renderings of them. He even tries to answer the big question (Did Arsenio eventually succeed in flying?) and while a sequel might be possible given the other twelve designs left unexplored, I doubt we will be that lucky. The copyright page for this book appears in the back instead of the front and I think this was done so that we could better appreciate the dedication to Bernasconi's father, who taught him to fly, and his mother, who taught him to land when he was growing up in Argentina. Captain Arsenio must have been that lucky as well.

A FASCINATING STUDY/CONTRAST OF THREE DIFFERENT “FEMINISMS”

Benita Roth is a professor of Sociology and Women’s Studies at the State University of New York, Binghamton.

She wrote in the Preface to this 2004 book, “How and why feminist movements emerged in the ‘second wave’ of American feminism is the subject of this book. My interest in this subject was prompted by lacunae in the literature on feminists of color in the second wave, but also by personal experiences… Why were there organizationally distinct feminisms in the late 1970s and early 1980s, largely organized along racial/ethnic lines? What led to the development of feminisms, when there was at least some agreement about feminist issues?... in this work I argue for understanding the historical development of second-wave feminsms as shaped at its core by dynamics of race/ethnicity and class among feminists. I argue that we need to understand that these dynamics were not solely about interpersonal interactions but also about the overall structure of the social movement sector, that is, the intermovement political field of the era, and about the overall structure of inequality in the United States.” (Pg. xi-xii)

She continues, “In this book, I argue that the second wave has to be understood as a group of feminisms, movements made by activist women that were largely organizationally distinct from one another, and from the beginning, largely organized along race/ethnic lines. In other words, there were more than two twinned social bases of feminism in the 1960s and 1970s; feminisms were articulated in diverse political communities… I trace the emergence and early development of Black, Chicana, and white feminist movements on the left during the second wave… I selected Black, Chicana, and white feminisms for study because of the timing of their emergences, the multistate scale of their organizing, and the kinds of connections and cleavages that existed on the ground between feminists from these communities.” (Pg. 3)

She adds, “I have two main concerns in this work. First… I document the articulation of feminisms in diverse communities. Recognition of feminist organizing in different communities allows us to ask questions about who came to feminism, how they came to feminism, and how feminism was done in different social spaces. Charting the organization of feminists of color also requires that we acknowledge that self-identified feminist activism is a political choice among other choices for empowering action that women can take for their communities. Second, I look at feminist emergences explored here as stories about the connections and cleavages between feminist movements, of the relationships between differently situated feminists, and the complicated movement dynamics that militated against these relationships.” (Pg. 4)

She explains, “I argue that a more fruitful approach for understanding the emergence of racial/ethnic feminisms lies in understanding that some women of color who were activists began organizing as feminists when some white women who were activists did, in the late 1960s, during a time of heightened popular protest, and that as organizationally distinct movements, these feminisms proliferated, related to each other, cooperated, and competed. Feminists of color saw themselves as belonging to a different movement than white feminists did, a self-perception that should be taken seriously; understanding why they saw themselves as different requires taking a feminist intersectional approach to the matter of oppressions.” (Pg. 10-11)

She points out, “Class inequality together with racial/ethnic inequality affected the potential for feminist solidarity across racial/ethnic lines because African American and Chicana feminists had white women in mind as their reference group, and thus did not see them as natural allies in the struggle for gender, racial/ethnic, and economic justice.” (Pg. 45)

She comments, “Black women did hold ambivalent attitudes toward white women’s liberation as an organized movement, although… their general hostility to feminist issues has been greatly exaggerated… In mainstream accounts, Black women’s ambivalence to feminism became a kind of trope, such that Black women hostile to feminism were always quoted alone with the view of well known ‘liberal’ feminist… In fact, the ambivalence of Black activist women toward organized white feminism was just that: a hesitancy to work with white women exclusively on gender (and not race, and not class) oppression.” (Pg. 98-99)

She observes, “Like their Black activists sisters, Chicanas were asked to take supportive roles in order to preserve Chicano culture and family roles, as emerging ‘Anglo’ feminism was construed to be a threat to the integrity of the Chicano community. Emerging Chicana feminists constructed counterarguments to the idea that feminism was not relevant to, or came from outside, their community. They argued that Chicanas and Mexican women in Mexico had a long tradition of social activism, and that only a gender egalitarian and politicized Chicano family could challenge Anglo domination effectively.” (Pg. 131)

She adds, “Chicana feminism … mobilized in a movement landscape that both shaped the arguments they made for feminism and that allowed them to stay linked to other Chicano activists in mixed-gender groups.” (Pg. 132) She also notes, “Chicana feminists challenged the idea that cultural preservation entailed their submission to male leadership, in part by presenting themselves as supportive of the family, and not at all hostile to men. In fact, early Chicana feminist organizing was characterized by the express desire to stay linked to men and to existing Chicano organizations while promoting a greater role for women in service to the Chicano cause.” (Pg. 139)

She acknowledges, “Chicana feminists encountered a masculinist bias against women’s full participation in the movement that was case as an internal problem. They saw their organizing as necessary in order to counter the effects that machismo had on their activism and on their lives; feminism as such was therefore not a mandate to leave the movement and join up with the white (or, for that matter, Black) feminists.” (Pg. 150) She summarizes, “Chicana feminists… saw themselves as the latest incarnation in a long history of nationalist struggle by Chicanas, and saw gender egalitarianism as a way to make the Chicano political family more effective in the struggle… Chicana feminists ultimately chose to organize in ways that brought them close to the Chicano movement.” (Pg. 176)

She comments, “white women’s groups desperately wanted women of color to join them. But gender universalism did lead to the neglect of issues raised by racial/ethnic feminists regarding racist domination. By asserting the universalist nature of gender oppression, white women’s liberationists would actually focus politically on what Black and Chicana feminists saw as exclusionary political goals.” (Pg. 195-196)

She concludes, “organizing within oppositional political milieus was never simply a question of feminists coopting resources and splitting off from parent movements… White women’s liberationists worked to separate themselves from a … fragmenting white Left, but nonetheless saw themselves as leftists; Black feminists organized in a neotraditionalized, increasingly militant Black movement… but did not want to further enervate their movement; and Chicana feminists worked for changes to the Chicano movement as a whole even as they organized new Chicana-led groups… All of these factors combined structured second-wave feminisms on the left along racial/ethnic lines.” (Pg. 214-215)

Do not disturb

A new release of a book from Natasha Knight equals to a ' do not disturb' sign reading it.
I rather like the the Alpha male Wolves that shift into stern dominant men. Protectective men and yet sensitive men. Natasha Knight knows her shapeshifting stories, remember Taken by the Beast? Well, Claimed by the Beast is even more action packed and even more firm action and discipline(!) is needed.
We meet Kayla and Elijah again from the first book. We see how their relationship has matured, it's not just spanking anymore... We meet a mad scientist that is trying to find a cure for Parkinsons disease but instead he turns into a shapeshifting monster. And kidnaps Rachel. Our hero Marcus comes to Rachels rescue of course, but that doesn't wrap up the story. No cherie! This long story continues with hot spanking scenes and a little more then just spanking. Natasha Knight, I think one of the best writers in Domestic Discipline, has written an even hotter book than Taken by the Beast, if that is possible. You don't have to read Taken first to read Claimed by the Beast, it's completely standalone story, but you would be doing yourself a favor.

So many deliciously hot scenes!

I loved Taken by the Beast and was looking forward to the sequel and this did not disappoint. Claimed by the Beast was just as good as the first one. I enjoyed that this book started with Elijah and Kayla. I loved their dynamic and it brought back all those yummy feelings reading their discipline session that Elijah had to give Kayla because of Rachel. Elijah is stern and demanding, whereas Marcus ever the disciplinarian like his brother seems more gentle, offering choices. Not that Rachel sees them as choices, I am sure. "You can, in the next few moments, take down your jeans and panties, lay across my lap yourself.... or you can fight me, have me take down your jeans and panties, have me lay you across my lap, then take your punishment, which would be more severe. Which do you choose?" Not a good choice in her point of view.

There is a corner scene in this book that is to die for. Absolutely so hot, it leaves you shaking.

This book was so amazing! There were so many delicious scenes and they seemed to be one right after the other. Do yourself a favor and read this book, you won't be sorry.

I just finished Claimed by the Beast and let me just tell you, it is HOT STUFF. Exactly my cup of tea. I love paranormal because it allows spanking in contemporary setting without raising all the usual questions of consent. And shifters are sexy. I loved getting Elijah and Kayla's DD life (and their new baby) and Marcus and Rachel had their share of sultry punishment, too. The action-packed plot was full of suspense and thrills an the bad guy had his own hero's arc as well!

Paraphrase of his other Books

If you have read any of The Earth Chronicles, then there is no need to purchase this book, unless you are looking to complete your collection. Not much (if any) new information is presented here, it contains basically excerpts from Sitchin's other works. To the beginner it may seem new and exciting, but I still wouldn't recommend this book even if you have never read any of the others, buy yourself a copy of the 12th Planet instead.

Great contribution to the series--stunning ending!

This contribution to Sitchin's Earth Chronicles series would stand on its own as one of his most interesting books. But Sitchin really buries the lead in this book. The last chapter is called an endpaper, and is the most stunning of chapter of any of his books.

Without giving away the ending, Sitchin goes through the entire pantheon of ancient astronaut "gods" we've come to know through him and shows how the Yahway of the Old Testament isn't any of these figures. His unexpected conclusion is mind-boggling and really changes the meaning of all of his previous books. I don't know why this wasn't the thesis of one of his books, and is instead included as a footnote to this book.

Very factual. Good Read

I have read a lot of Sitchins books and this one is one of the best reads. It does a lot on comparisons to the writings in the Bible to other writings of other counties and beliefs. The section about the building of the arc and how he was able to get a pair of all animals on it is very interesting. Also of why Noah was selected to survive was interesting.

About the Author
Karen began her involvement with emotional intelligence when she founded the Nueva School (Hillsborough, California). She saw that the central foundation of a school should be not simply giving students knowledge, but giving them the opportunity to develop wisdom. Karen created the nation's first emotional intelligence curriculum, Self Science, a program she facilitated for nearly 3 decades. She was honored as Educator of the Year by the California Association of the Gifted. She has served on a broad range of trustee and advisory boards for social, emotional & mental health. Karen earned her MA at the University of Massachusetts.

Clear guidelines for a stronger community

As a former student at Nueva, a school that included Self Science in their curriculum, I was constantly amazed while reading this book by its accuracy and specificity. The book clearly, with many examples and guidelines, lays out a year-long (or two-year) curriculum that allows students to learn about and make connections with others as well as themselves. Self Science is one of the most valuable classes I've ever taken.

Wrong edition

I wanted to order several students' editions for students to use in my classroom. Even thought the description reads "pupil edition", all the books I received were teachers' editions, which I cannot let the students use because the answers are written in. I looked into returning them, but the Amazon website just kept me going around in a loop.

This is a very well written book that not only addresses topics that are covered during a Java technical interview but it also has a range of interview questions for each topic.

It captures concepts on a wide range of topics: covering fundamentals, OOPs, generics, collections, threading, memory management, various design and Java language concepts, in a very precise manner. Each chapter contains a series of questions for your practice. This book is really very comprehensive. It also contains lots of code snippets and figures to explain the concept. Overall a great book to prepare you for technical interviews. Happy to make this investment.

Wow, is this guide book ever comprehensive about Java as it relates to the technical interview round! Honestly, if you want to make sure that you are mentally prepared to answer any and all questions in a thoughtful, intelligent manner that is sure to impress, then you need to peruse this book. You might not need all the information presented, as it is pretty darned extensive. However, if you go over the sections you are not sure about, you can go into your technical interview feeling confident. Actually, this is also a good refresher on Java if you only need that as well.
