Excellent book for neural network developers

I have searched extensively for practical books on neural networks, but did not find any that were good for practical use. I want to program them myself, so that they are easier to adapt to future developments.
But recently I found 2 good books. These are written by Marsland en Samarasinghe respectively. In both books neural networks are clearly explained and both use hand computation examples. For programmers of neural networks these books are ideal. A must if you look for practical books.

Great book!

I found Dr. Samarasinghe's very easy to understand yet very comprehensive in its coverage of neural networks. The hand calculations really helped me see how the algorithms are applied to real-world problems. This is one of the best books on the subject that I own, and I own a bunch of them. I highly recommend it!

I've read a lot of data mining, statistical, and/or computer programming books. I've also read a lot of the scientific literature in the subject area. This is well-written, well-organized, and very clear in terms of communication of information. I've read way too many books in this area that forget that the main point is to actually communicate information effectively, and/or get muddled up in details or fail to explain things from start to finish, don't define concepts, use equations with poorly defined symbology, etc. This is definitely not one of those. I've found it to actually be an enjoyable and enlightening read, which you don't often say for technical books. In my opinion, this is a very well done book.

Refreshingly New Vampire World

Author Angela McGurk has created a refreshingly new world of vampires who co-exist with humans peacefully. Treaties have been signed, laws enacted, the weaker humans protected with respect. Part of this world requires that humans who wish to be turned do so with consent. The consent is a legal document, witnessed and signed so no one can say "I didn't ask to be turned" and sue the very wealthy vampire houses. The heroine of the story, Darcy Francis Elizabeth Salix, goes to sleep a human and awakes as a vampire in a very painful way. She doesn't recall giving consent--except in a dream like state--and certainly never signed a contract! Her Sire and his underlings seek to assure her she did, indeed, but when she sees the paperwork, it is a forgery. Reluctantly, and only because her life depends on it, she moves into the big mansion that belongs to the Newcastle Cohort, where things grow even stranger as she transitions to full vampire.

Darcy is a feisty, kick ass heroine, who is quite capable of defending herself--except when she is around Conn, her Sire. She is beyond angry with him, but cannot stop thinking about him. She is pulled to him in ways she does not understand or want. Tall, dark, and dangerous, an inexplicable, even in vampire terms, bond holds her to him. She fights the attraction at every turn, in every definition, but that pull...

Into this world is thrust a murder mystery. Who would kill a vampire related to such a powerful Sire? Why butcher the victim in such a particular way? What old hurt did Conn inflict that his relatives are now being stalked by this heinous killer?

When I read a paranormal novel, in addition to good writing, I pay particular attention to world building, characterization, and plot. Angela McGurk delighted me with all four criteria and threw in some nerd humor, to boot. A delightful read which earned five firecrackers out of five from me!

Like getting advice from a wise relative

The Art of Manliness is actually a website that is full of great information. They also have a facebook page and will let you know when new articles are posted. I believe it was last year that 31 Basic Life Skills was posted. The great thing about it, for me as a parent, was that as they posted, it made me think of things that we might need to talk about before our son left for college next year. Now that time is months away, and being able to send this book with him is one more way to show my support to him as he transitions from boy to man. Many of these things may have been taught in the home, when a young man is really out on his own, the details that he may have forgotten may be important. This book is practical, but also gives a sense of the "arm around the shoulder" that may be comforting to a young man trying to make his way in the world for the first time. I cannot overstate how great I think these lessons are, and I wish the Art of Manliness website would publish more of their articles in book form.

Great read but not entirely there.

Being a fan of artofmanliness.com, their books, and just starting out on my own, I found this book to be easy to read and enlightning. It's set out for the 31 days and gives out neat advice, particularly how to gain credit, ways of cooking with little material, and advice on networking, along with simple guides for tying a tie, making a bed, and changing a toilet's "guts". All of this is provided in a neat, blue cover and I'd recommended it to newcomers.

My gripe with it is that, for some of its subjects, the book provides links to artofmanliness.com articles. I don't discredit these articles' accuracy and helpfulness, they are good, but are not guaranteed to hold up years from now. It felt like promotion for the site and a cheap way to shorten pages instead of providing physical content that can be read years from now. Also, more could've been provided for simple subjects; more ways to tie a tie.

It's a small negative in the series, as the first two artofmanliness books were self-contained creations, but still one I would recommend.

Very good book!

I would give this book 4.5 stars if I could. Overall, the book works as a primer on various skills like cooking or fixing a flat tire. My only gripe is the fact that the book sometimes points to URLs that link to the actual Art of Manliness website, where a short elaboration in the book would've sufficed. With that said, I wouldn't mind going on to the AoM website but perhaps not everyone has Internet access.

About the Author
All-star artist John Romita Jr. has drawn nearly every Marvel character including Spider-man (Amazing Spider-man Coming Home), the Punisher and Thor. Following in his father's footsteps, he is best-known for his Spider-man work.

Michael Ryan is the author of four volumes of poetry, two memoirs, and a collection of essays. He is a professor of English and creative writing at the University of California, Irvine, where he lives with his wife and daughter.

Ladronn grew up drawing and inking in Mexico while idolizing artists such as M bius. Ladronn has drawn for Marvel, DC, and several independent publishing houses. the title says it all

If the title does not grab you and make you want to but this book then i am probably wasting my time but here i go....john romita jr's work is so close to the way Jack Kirby would have done it is scary... the over the top action shots and the power of both featured characters is ssssooo cool the run was first presented in thor vol 2 22-26 a great ark if you missed this in the early 2000's now is your chance to pick this book up and read it.

The Mad Titan Returns

This is a great, fun, action-packed story. Dan Jurgens and John Romita Jr are at their best here. Thor and Thanos going at it in a thunderous all-out brawl! Highly recommend it to any Thor, Thanos, or Marvel fan. Nay...any fan of comics. Grab a pint and enjoy!!!

Not the actual Thanos!

I should point this out, as it looks like no one else has, but this is not the real Thanos in this story. The events in this story are very out of character for where Thanos was left off in the mid 90s by writers like Jim Starlin and Ron Marz. It was latter retconed by Jim Starlin in Infinity Abyss that the Thanos in this story (and others like in Kazar and Avengers: Celestial Quest) were actually clone experiments by the real Thanos. With that said this is an in continuity book and the events in this do have impact on latter titles like Infinity Abyss and the solo Thanos run, collected in the trade Thanos: Redemption.

Overall if you're looking at this book in hopes of learning more about the Thanos character this isn't the place to look. But if you're looking for a fun, somewhat epic Thor story and you're a fan of the art style from the early 2000s, then you'll likely enjoy this book.

......... For a passionate and well-turned biography, this novel is recommended for its fluid reading and what is probably the closest thing to the truth ever written about this historical figure, Soeur Sourire, the Singing Nun.

From the Author
The movie made by MGM starring Debbie Reynolds was an upbeat, whimsical story made primarily as a propaganda movie for Fichermont convent. The order's superiors gave the okay for the film only if it bore no resemblance to the true story of Sr. Luc Gabriel.  The 1966 movie, The Singing Nun, is complete fiction with no factual information about Jeannine Deckers, AKA, Soeur Sourire. The biography, The Singing Nun Story: The Life and Death of Soeur Sourire, is nonfiction and recounts the true story of Deckers' life, which has little of the light heartedness and feel-good quality of the MGM film.  The truth is not always pleasant or amusing, but needs to be told all the same.

About the Author
D.A. Chadwick has an M.S. in Law and a B.S. in Psychology. She is the author of eight other books and a professional translator of French, German and Dutch to English.

A truly excellent story

I bought this book on the recommendation of a Women's Studies instructor at the college where I work. I was hooked after the first chapter. This is a wonderful and heart wrenching story. Like many, I thought the Singing Nun was just the light hearted singer. I had no idea her life was full of so much turmoil. Jeannine Deckers life was touching yet extremely sad.

Life of the Singing Nun

I was looking for a book that told of many details of the "The Singing Nun." This book met that couriosity. I found the book easy reading with alot of information about the life of Jeanine Deckers. There were many times during the reading of this book that brought back memories of the Hollywood movie, news clips here and there, and of course video clips on Youtube. I felt the good times and the hard times in her life. The only regret I have after reading this book is that if her devoted fans knew many of the things that were happening to the Singing Nun they could have helped more and perhaps avoided the tragedy at the end of her life.

A Story of Commitment to Art and God

If you are attached to the lite version of this woman's life as depicted in a certain film, this book is not for you. But, if you desire to know the truth and understand the difficulties of artists in general and the especially difficult lives of a few, this book is a good read. Often the stories behind great art and music are not happy ones, but knowing them gives us a greater appreciation for how anyone going through such trials can still manage to explore their craft. Soeur Sourire recorded songs during a period of great turmoil in history and often maintained being cheery and upbeat while expressing a touching relationship with God. It really is amazing that she managed to hold on as long as she did, as so much seemed to be against her. I think that a lot can be learned from this book, especially that there is so much more to learn. I can only hope that someday that all of Ms. Deckers writings can be properly archived so that we can know more about her thoughts regarding life here on earth and beyond. She is an artist who should never be forgotten. At the end of the day, the real Soeur Sourire offers so much more than the fictional depiction of her.

The book argues that liveness itself emerges from dynamic tensions inherent in mediated musical contexts―tensions between music as an acoustic human utterance, and musical sound as something produced or altered by machines. Sanden analyzes liveness in mediatized music (music for which electronic mediation plays an intrinsically defining role), exploring the role this concept plays in defining musical meaning. In discussions of music from both popular and classical traditions, Sanden demonstrates how liveness is performed by acts of human expression in productive tension with the electronic machines involved in making this music, whether on stage or on recording. Liveness is not a fixed ontological state that exists in the absence of electronic mediation, but rather a dynamically performed assertion of human presence within a technological network of communication. This book provides new insights into how the ideas of performance and liveness continue to permeate the perception and reception of even highly mediatized music within a society so deeply invested, on every level, with the use of electronic technologies.

About the Author
Since receiving his B.A. and M.A. degrees in economics from the University of Louvain and then his Ph.D. from Yale, Pierre Pestieau has had over thirty years of experience teaching and conducting research in public economics and population economics. Besides being Professor of Economics at the University of Liege, he is a member of C.O.R.E., associate member of P.S.E., C.E.P.R. Fellow and C.E.S.Ifo Fellow. He is currently coeditor of the Journal of Public Economics and associate editor of Economica, Finanzarchiv and the Journal of Public Economic Theory.
