The American Jesuits, by Raymond A. Schroth

With infectious energy and a genuine gift for storytelling, Raymond A. Schroth recounts the history of Jesuits in the United States. The American Jesuits isn’t simply a book for Catholics; it’s for anyone who loves a well-told historical tale. For more than 450 years, Jesuit priests have traveled the globe out of a religious commitment to serve others. Their order, the Society of Jesus, is the largest religious order of men in the Catholic Church, with more than 20,000 members around the world and almost 3,000 in the United States. It is one of the more liberal orders in the Church, taking very public stands in the U.S. on behalf of social justice causes such as the promotion of immigrants’ rights and humanitarian aid, including assistance to Africa’s poor, and against American involvement in “unjust wars.” Jesuits have played an important part in Americanizing the Catholic Church and in preparing Catholic immigrants for inclusion into American society.

Starting off with the first Jesuit to reach the New World — he was promptly murdered on the Florida coast — Schroth focuses on the key periods of the Jesuit experience in the Americas, beginning with the era of European explorers, many of whom were accompanied by Jesuits and some of whom were Jesuits themselves. Suppressed around the time of the American Revolution, the Society experienced resurgence in the nineteenth century, arriving in the U.S. along with waves of Catholic immigrants and establishing a network of high schools and universities. In the mid-twentieth century, the Society transformed itself to serve an urbanizing nation.

Schroth is not blind to the Society’s shortcomings and not all of his story reflects well on the Jesuits. However, as he reminds readers, Jesuits are not gods and they don’t dwell in mountaintop monasteries. Rather, they are imperfect men who work in a messy world to “find God in all things” — and to help their fellow men and women do the same.

A quintessential American tale of men willing to take risks — for Indians, blacks, immigrants, and the poor, and to promote a loving picture of God — The American Jesuits offers a broad and compelling look at the impact of this 400-year-old international order on American culture and the culture’s impact on the Jesuits.

From Publishers Weekly
Schroth, a Jesuit priest and professor of humanities at St. Peter's College in Jersey City, N.J., tells the story of the Society of Jesus' presence in North America in this account that begins with a martyrdom on the coast of Florida in 1566. From humble beginnings as missionaries bent on converting Native Americans, the society grew over nearly five centuries on this continent into an organization best known today for its work in education and social activism. In between, members have served as war chaplains and antiwar protesters, high school and college educators, and writers and editors addressing church and societal issues through the community's influential magazine America. Blending history and analysis, Schroth chronicles the society's weaknesses and failures, too, including its foot-dragging on racial issues, ranging from its involvement in slavery in the 19th century to slowness in integrating its schools in the 20th. Schroth also discusses the community's decline in numbers, but he ends on a hopeful note, quoting the late Karl Rahner: There will always be men who... pass by all the idols of this world and dare to give themselves unconditionally to the incomprehensibility of God, seen as love and mercy. This is absorbing reading for those with an interest in the Jesuits. (Oct.)

Review

“An engaging read, and an elegant synthesis of four centuries of Jesuit heroics, controversies, flops, and hard work in the United States. Should be assigned reading for students of American Catholicism.”

“Schroth’s lively, detailed, scrupulously honest narrative does not dispel the Jesuit mystique, but instead provides concrete examples from throughout the centuries that explain the society’s origins and survival. . . . This is institutional history at its best. . . . Essential.”

Jebbie Grads, Order Today
By Thomas M. Sullivan
If you, as I, graduated from a Jesuit university (in my case, Fordham), you simply have to add this volume to your collection. I had the added incentive of living in Lake George, NY, and having cherished as my personal hero for many years Father Isaac Jogues, Jesuit missionary to the Algonquin and Iroquois and the first white man to see the body of water he named Lac du Saint Sacrement in 1646. Father Schroth is a solid writer who presents both a scholarly and well-balanced treatment of his subject matter, entirely unafraid to consider both the splendid triumphs and undoubted failings of the order in America. He does a particularly good job on the founding and early trials of the Jesuit institutions of higher learning. In sum, a fine read.

One person can make a world of difference.
By Bernie Cicirelli
In his book "The American Jesuits: A History" Raymond Schroth recounts the long history of the Society of Jesus from its genesis as a small group of followers of a Spaniard named Ignatius Lopez of Loyola to the greatest teaching order this world has known. But unlike many previous works on Jesuits, Fr. Schroth extolls both the noble and ignoble facets of the order. From stories of men willing to be martyred "For the Greater Glory of God" to a disgraceful exclusion from the order of those of Jewish ancestry. An order consisting of men working in the service of others and men in pursuit of power, often concurrently.

Fr. Schroth is a master storyteller as well as a thorough historian. This book is well worth reading.

the Good, Bad, Indifferent
By art owen
Great history of American Jesuits written lucidly, EZ to follow, well-organized. The author depicts the company's transition from
a preeminent educational power-house (following WWII) to a more social-conscious impetus---looking to under-developed areas such as South America, India, and to the disadvantaged in the USA.
The Jesuit influence has dimmed in academe due to adherence to Scholastic pedagogy---very rich in classical literature (Latin & Greek & verbal/written expression), but extremely weak in math, science and economics---with the result that the modern Jesuit on the typical school college campus is more or less redundant.
But their influence is strong in under-developed countries where their work with the poor and oppressed is not particularly welcomed by the affluent power-structure.
There are many heroes in this story. Tho fewer in numbers the current company may be more effective in following the mission envisioned by their great founder Ignatius Loyola.

Not a Classic, But a Worthwhile Read
By Eric Goldman
By Eric Goldman

For the past couple of years, I have been researching how we regulate reputation systems. As part of researching other disciplines' approaches to reputation systems, I was pleasantly surprised to find this book, which discusses web reputation systems from a technical/product development standpoint. I'm not aware of other books directly on point, so that alone makes the book noteworthy.

The word "reputation" is a complex and nuanced word. This book defines reputation as "information used to make a value judgment about an object or a person." Notice how this definition treats reputation as actionable information (i.e., making a "judgment"). I favor that approach; my work also uses an actionable definition of reputation.

Their definition equally treats both objects and people as having "reputation," and this does not work. In general, people are dynamic, i.e., they can change behavior; while content is static, i.e., an item of content does not change its character unless subsequently edited. This single definition of "reputation" created significant tension throughout the book. Recognizing this, the authors often bifurcated the discussion to separately address the process of establishing a person's "reputation" (which they confusingly called "karma"). However, the book primarily focuses on grading and sorting content items, especially user-generated content, and I personally would not describe content items as having a "reputation." As a result, I think the book is mistitled. It principally addresses content filtering, not "reputation" as I use the term.

Although this analytical tension pervades the book, the book nevertheless contained a lot of useful insights about both content filtering and establishing user trustworthiness. The authors have a lot of experience building filtering systems for different websites, so the book is packed with the kind of first-hand observations that only an insider can offer. There's no substitute for the voice of experience when designing Web 2.0 UGC systems, and this book provides an easy and accessible way to learn some of these tips and tricks.

The book emphasizes the authors' contributions to the reputation system at Yahoo Answers, and rightly so. Yahoo Answers has emerged into a bona fide success story and recently trumpeted its billionth answer. In my opinion, the book's high point is Chapter 10, a case study of how Yahoo Answers developed a new filtering and reputation system that helped turbocharge the Yahoo Answers community.

Although the book doesn't say this directly, two key lessons from Yahoo Answers' evolution are:

1) UGC websites should let users vote on content, but not all user votes should be weighted equally.

2) UGC websites do not need to publish all user-supplied content items in an equally prominent manner. Perhaps some content should be obscure/hard-to-find until other users validate it.

The book pitches these conclusions as novel, but they seemed fairly intuitive to me. We implemented a very similar system embodying these two points back in 2000-01 at Epinions. Epinions allowed users to grade each others' content; we weighted votes differentially based on users' credibility; and we displayed ungraded and poorly graded content only to registered users (a small fraction of our readers). The fact that the authors "discovered" these conclusions at Yahoo Answers shows the dire need for books like this to help websites implement best UGC management practices without reinventing the wheel.

The fact that the authors didn't acknowledge the Epinions precedent (and other systems like it) highlights another weakness of the book. There is a deep academic literature addressing the book's topics (especially on content filtering and user incentive systems), but the book barely acknowledges this literature. For example, several times the authors cite Dan Ariely's Predictably Irrational for descriptions of human psychology and foibles. That's a perfectly credible citation, but it should be one of many literature citations, not the only citation. Instead of dipping into the rich academic literature, the book almost exclusively relies on the authors' experience-based impressions. These impressions are a valuable information source that makes the book worth reading. However, because those impressions aren't tempered with more rigorous academic findings, it's not clear to me at all that the authors' conclusions represent true best practices...or even state-of-the-art.

Because of its many structural flaws, this edition will not become a classic. Nevertheless, I have enthusiastically recommended the book to several UGC start-ups because the book provides a good repository of high-value experience-based perspectives that are not readily available elsewhere. Even if the book's recommendations are debatable, it's a debate worth having.

A deep, insightful, and well-presented treatment of on-line reputation models
By John C. Stepper
I'm researching different models to use for our corporate collaboration platform and I'm looking to implement a social recognition/reputation framework. Our framework needs to make sense for users and content in many different businesses and support functions. It's one thing to rate things on Amazon and Netflix and another to deploy a system inside an enterprise. (I'd also researched peter Reiser's "Community Equity" - [...])

This excellent book proved *extremely* useful. It dissects the different popular models - Amazon, eBay, Yahoo, Digg - as well as many others I was not familiar with. It analyzed each and clearly highlighted the pros and cons of each; how different models can be used (and abused) to meet different business objectives. Priceless.

More than a dry analysis, the book is filled with interesting (to me!) insights on the potential pitfalls of each model. I was often surprised at how things I took for granted had some hidden biases or other traps. The sections on the issues with leaderboards, for example, were clear and practical.

My only advice when reading is to skim the initial chapter on the "graphical language" for reputation models. It seemed unnecessary and too abstract. It almost put me off from reading the rest of the book but I needed help. And I'm really glad I continued. The remaining chapters got more and more engaging. The final case study on preventing abuse in Yahoo Answers reads like a page-turner. (Really!)

If you are building any kind of application with ratings or some kind of recognition/social capital/reputation for users, then read this book. It will help you avoid the mistakes made by others before you (you'll never forget the story of The Dollhouse Mafia). And it will help you meet your business objectives for including ratings and reputation in the first place.

Basic and Yahoo Centric
By Edward J. Barton
The book on web reputation systems is getting a bit long in the tooth, having been written about 4 years ago. Much of the information that is contained in here, including and especially the psychology elements of the users - as well as the pitfalls and design considerations - are still relevant since they apply to basic human psychology and behaviors.

From a technology perspective, as noted by a few of the more recent reviewers, the information is now getting dated and the Web 2.0+ technology architecture that is out there today is not contained in this book at all. So, while the principles hold, the practices will need to be updated. Additionally, because the book was published by Yahoo Press, the case studies and many of the elements of the examples are very focused on Yahoo. In and of itself, that's not a problem, but the book may have been more interesting and relevant by really pulling in a much broader example base, and different case studies that weren't so Yahoo centric.

All in all, if you have an interest in the topic, it is probably an interesting read for background, overview and psychologic/behavioral purposes.

Droppers: America’s First Hippie Commune, Drop City, by Mark Matthews

Sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll. In popular imagination, these words seem to capture the atmosphere of 1960s hippie communes. Yet when the first hippie commune was founded in 1965 outside Trinidad, Colorado, the goal wasn’t one long party but rather a new society that integrated life and art. In Droppers, Mark Matthews chronicles the rise and fall of this utopian community, exploring the goals behind its creation and the factors that eventually led to its dissolution.

Seeking refuge from enforced social conformity, the turmoil of racial conflict, and the Vietnam War, artist Eugene Bernofsky and other founders of Drop City sought to create an environment that would promote both equality and personal autonomy. These high ideals became increasingly hard to sustain, however, in the face of external pressures and internal divisions.

In a rollicking, fast-paced style, Matthews vividly describes the early enthusiasm of Drop City’s founders, as Bernofsky and his friends constructed a town in the desert literally using the “detritus of society.” Over time, Drop City suffered from media attention, the distraction of visitors, and the arrival of new residents who didn’t share the founders’ ideals.

Matthews bases his account on numerous interviews with Bernofsky and other residents as well as written sources. Explaining Drop City in the context of the counterculture’s evolution and the American tradition of utopian communities, he paints an unforgettable picture of a largely misunderstood phenomenon in American history.

From Publishers Weekly
One of the first utopian communities to emerge in the 1960s, Drop City, Colorado was founded as a self-supporting artist's enclave. In this entertaining chronicle, author and journalist Matthews (Smoke Jumping on the Western Fire Line) recounts Drop City's story as told to him by a number of its inhabitants, including co-founder Eugene Victor Debs Bernofsky, whose plan was to "own the property, build A-frame houses, pay no rent, make films and art and... put our trust in dose sic Cosmic Forces" (influenced by "Bucky" Fuller, the A-frames became the commune's iconic geodesic domes). As much a look at the sex-and-drugs counterculture as it is a cautionary tale about the problems of utopia-building, the story of Drop City almost comes to an early end over a mysteriously depleted can of government commodity peanut butter; ultimately, it would devolve into a disillusioned, dilapidated slum. Matthews's attempts to contextualize (or perhaps elevate) the narrative with historical notes on other U.S. communes and the hippie stomping grounds of Haight Ashbury distract from Bernofsky's tale, which is fascinating, inadvertently hilarious, and very telling. From Booklist
Drop City, arguably the first 1960s intentional community, inspired imitators through the mid-1970s before the whole commune ideal ran out of steam among inevitable personal differences and theoretical quibbles among core members. Artist Eugene Bernofsky, interviewed in depth for this book, was a driving force during Drop City’s brief flourishing. He and a cadre of like-minded artsy-craftsy folks built the commune’s various buildings by using “the detritus of society,” otherwise known as debris and scrap materials. Architecturally, the Droppers favored the geodesic domes of Buckminster Fuller, tricked out with colorful and inventive exteriors and eccentric interior decor. In 1967 they won Fuller’s Dymaxion Award for their efforts. Eventually, Drop City devolved as the communards went their separate ways, but Matthews digs deeply to create a comprehensive study of its occasionally wacky progress that is rather short on wackiness itself. Much more sociological account than sex-and-drugs memoir, this is a unique contribution to knowledge of an American period now receding in the mangled short-term memories of many who lived it. --Mike Tribby

TRUE GRIT
By Jo Bernofsky
At last the true inside story of an inspirational group of youth compelled to have some creative fun during the Vietnam War disaster from which our country is still reeling. These droppers took their axes to auto junk yards and literally chopped out the tops of cars for building living domes. The story is beautifully presented by Mark Matthews who interviewed the founder of this non-intentional community for over a year. The story is inter-cut with powerful historical reportage of the Vietnam debacle. With the perpetual wars going on today and our Government seemingly unable to achieve peace, this brilliant book is particularly pertinent to the youth of today seeking creative meaning in their lives. If you're looking for something beyond all the daily depressing news, this book is for you!

Take a trip down memory lane with the droppers and read this book.
By Rolling Mountain
Drop City, America's First Hippie Commune, is an American story of finding individual freedom and community as told through the eyes and words of the droppers who sought those dreams in a world gone mad with militaristic government and war, who sought refuge from the drumming conformity of stifling religious and educational institutions and mindless service to corporate greed and consumption . . . Mark Mathews deftly unfolds a narrative on what drove the cultural forces that awakened a generation born out of World War II to follow the 'cosmic forces' of love, joy and happiness and the cultural sprouting of hippie communes in America. Drop City is told by the people who made it happen, droppings they would say, colorful, funny, tragic seekers born out of the American experience.

Take a trip down memory lane with the droppers and read this book.

American history you won't learn in school...
By Sandy Borrow
Not only does this book describe the atmosphere and events surrounding the Viet Nam war, it incorporates the assimilation of an immigrant Eastern European family into American life. The development of America's first commune owes its idealism to the Bernofsky family's history and how their ideals influenced Eugene Bernofsky's vision. I found this book to be highly informative and extremely funny. The interviews with Mr. Bernofsky prove his razor sharp sense of humor while making a social commentary that documents a challenging time in America's history.

Dr. Eric Berne, has attained recognition for developing one of the most innovative approaches to modern psychotherapy. In his writings and teachings, until his death in 1970, Dr. Berne laid the groundwork for a rational method for understanding and analyzing human behavior, which is gaining increasing application in modern therapy as one of the most promising new developments in the mental health field. Psychoanalysis as used in this book is meant to refer to what is known as "orthodox" psychoanalysis, that is, the resolution of infantile conflicts through the systematic use of free association, dealing with the phenomena of transference and resistance according to the principles of Freud.

Review
`This book is the result of thirty years of hard thinking by an acute moral philosopher on the foundations of our morality.' Times Literary Supplement

`It is a candid and ingenious work.' International Philosophical Quarterly, March 1997

`Those who have engaged in considerations of the M/A and I/F distinctions owe a considerable debt to Bennett for showing them how to say exactly what they mean. If this work contained that philosophical excellence alone it would be worthy of attention. It contains that and much more. Action theorists, the disputants in the consequentialist/anti-consequentialist debate and those who wish to think deeply about the M/A and I/F distinctions have much to learn from a close reading of The Act Itself.' Thomas A Cavanaugh, The Philosophical Quarterly

`This fine book continues Bennett's long interest in the nature and moral significance of the distinction between making and allowing ... this is an admirable book - engaging, direct and a pleasure to read.' Jonathan Dancy, Mind

About the Author
Jonathan Bennett has taught at Cambridge University and has been visiting professor at both Pittsburgh and Princeton Universities. He gave the Tanner lectures at Brasenose College, Oxford in 1980 and the John Locke Lectures at Oxford University in 1992

Why isn't this book more popular?
By A. Sepielli
The purpose of this book is to argue for two claims:

1) There is no moral significance to the doing/allowing distinction.

2) The "Doctrine of Double Effect" is false.

The doing/allowing distinction and the DDE lie at the core of "common sense morality", and so Bennett's frying some pretty big fish by taking them on. His arguments are simultaneously creative and rigorous, drawing heavily on metaphysics and the philosophy of action to reach some rather startling moral conclusions. As an application of metaphysics to ethics, this book is exemplary, second in the contemporary literature only to Parfit's Reasons and Persons.

That's why it's surprising that it's only the 2,000,000-th most popular book on Amazon (as of the time of this review). If you're interested in the CENTRAL problems of normative ethics, and enjoy work that challenges our most deeply held views, put this in your shopping cart tout de suite!

_First of all the forward is written by Dr.Raymond Moody, and while a lot of "researchers" throw his name around carelessly, the good doctor is careful of the work that he actually endorses. This well organised and truly encyclopedic guide is clearly worthy of his endorsement. In over a decade of personal research, this is the best single reference work on death and the afterlife that I've found. All the entries are well written, professional, and scholarly. Indeed, just by browsing through this thick volume you begin to see connections between subjects that may never have occured to you before (such as between shamanism and the mystery religions.) The highest praise that I can give this book is that it contained a sizable amount of information that even I wasn't familiar with- definately worth investing in for your library.

_After all, what subject is ultimately of greater importance?

less than expected
By Brenda V. Lazier
The good thing about this book is that the information is all listed in alphabetical order. I was very disappointed when I read it: has little info about what the title suggests, but is instead the authors list of comparisons or tidbits of items from different beliefs, most have little or nothing to do with the idea of death and afterlife. Is this all he has to offer? It does not compare in any way to Raymond Moody or others who have written insightful and informative books and manage to stick to the subject. Maybe I just wish the book had a title that would reflect the actual info in the book. I'd like to get my money back.

How to Create a Ghost
By Johns
This book was inspired by some research published by the British Society for Psychical Research in the early 70s about the creation of ghostly phenomena. Apparently, it's easy to do. This book follows the adventures of a group of people who met regularly to establish and then deepen contact with a fictitious, concocted 17th century English aristocrat who they named Philip.

Once conditions were right, Philip manifested without fail. The seance room table was observed to creak, groan and move around. As the weeks went by it would perform more startling actions, like rushing across the room to greet a newcomer, chase someone round the room and distort itself by raising only one of its legs. On one occasion it even bit a participant by trapping part of her hand between the two edges of its corner joint. In addition, the table would rap answers to questions about specific aspects of the life of Philip.

The book mentions how a physical cost was paid by the participants in terms of colds, flu and severe headaches that resulted from the experiment.

This book proves that what spiritualists may interpret as messages from the dead may well be nothing of the kind, because if people sit round in the expectation of ghostly manifestations, then these will result. Therefore, contacting the dead would appear to be a waste of time, I suppose, unless information comes through that can be subsequently verified and which was unknown by the sitters.

Debunkers of psychokinetic phenomena will have to think again if they read this, and it may well be that the ideas of Newtonian physics will have to be tossed in the trash.

I would have given this book 5 stars, but I found the second half a bit boring, with too much theory and analysis.

Hard to argue with...
By A. J. Kitt
This is research, folks, in a very readable form (mostly). It describes the circumstances, processes, and experiences of a legitimate experiment in a very readable way, alternating with the "science" stuff average readers often find quite boring. If you're not into the science part, skip it. The rest is absolutely fascinating.

The experiment's outcome might horrify skeptics and believers alike - real effects were demonstrated, but not in a way that would please either of the extremes. And, for those of you who want real-life science and methodology applied to paranormal phenomena, this is TRULY written FOR YOU!

A Psychokinetic Adeventure with Entities
By S. Cranow
Do you believe in ghosts? Do you believe in poltergeists? The wrapping on the wall and the moving of furniture has all been documented and proven. But is it really ghosts that are doing all this. Sure many incidence are fraudulent, some might be ghosts and other incidences might be psychokinesis or moving things with the mind.

A psychic society in Toronto, Canada came together and decided to create a fictional entity named Philip. This group of people numbering close to 8 -10 people met regularly to perform this experiment. first they brainstormed and came up with a fictional story for this guy Philip, a story that could no way be real. Then they had practice sessions where they would meditate and then try to conjure this fictitious ghost ,Phillip. For the first year they were unsuccessful. After about a year of trying and not producing any tangible results they decided to switch up their tactics.

They began copying from the spiritualists who conjured spirits in a group called a séance but with some major differences. Like the spiritualists they would gather in a group. But instead of mediating like they did before they copied the technique of socializing before conjuring. Instead of using a psychic medium they agreed that no one would play that role and instead if using dimly lit rooms they would use a well lit room.

Purpose was strictly scientific. Their goal was to produce a visible phantom generated by their psychic energy. Ultimately in this goal they were not successful. They did however manage to communicate with this invisible entity. A communication system of knock for yes and no communication was set up. Under laboratory conditions this entity moved tables, made knocking sounds and produced other phenomena. Belief and expectation are needed for results. this book will change the way you look at psychic phenomena and the paranormal.

Zapped by Space Guns into a Shit Hole on Acid (1985)

I would never do acid in New York City—it’s too dirty and claustrophobic—but when you’re stuck way out in Buttfuck, Ontario, it’s your only escape.

First, let me tell you how Buttfuck this place was. Canadian developers back then were busy creating cookie-cutter housing communities in the middle of nowhere. They had slogans such as “Tomorrow’s city … today” and names such as New Granada and Bridlewood. They were far from the city and had no drugs, bars, gangs, sluts, or crime—just trees, houses, and the local school.

My parents were educated but working-class Scots who wanted to get as far away from their shitty past as possible. Like all ex–poor people they wanted a better life for their kids and this seemed like a great opportunity. They tried England but it wasn’t working. Canada was brand-new back then. It had just settled on a flag in 1965 and was yet to choose a national anthem (they chose “O Canada” in 1980). In the 1970s, they were building their lower middle class from scratch and pouring British immigrants into the mold like pancake mix.

In 1975, five years after a breathtakingly gorgeous baby Me was born, the Glaswegians who created me gave up on their new home in England and stuck the whole family in a mass-produced Canadian suburb surrounded by farmers’ fields. Kanata is a half hour from Canada’s tiny capital, Ottawa, and had houses that were so prefab and generic, I would often get lost trying to figure out which one was mine.

On my first day of school, I was asked to say a few words and after using my posh English accent to say, “Well, hellowe, I simply cannot tell you how chuffed I am to be here in Canad-er and have brought along my park-er for the occasion,” I got the shit pounded out of me so badly, I was saying, “Maggie Longclaws is pregnant, eh?” like Bob and Doug McKenzie within the week. This began my life role as a misfit always adapting to uncomfortable situations. Whether it’s an Englishman in Ontario, an English speaker in French Canada, a Canadian in New York, or the only dad at the family resort covered in tattoos, I’ve always been most comfortable when I’m out of place.

Can you blame them for kicking my ass? (1975)

It was fun, though. Rural seclusion is great when you’re a little kid. We shot at each other with BB guns, chased cows, and would make jumps for our bikes that were so intense, anyone who landed wrong was guaranteed a broken wrist. This was in the pre-safety days when not only did we not wear helmets, we didn’t even wear shoes, and if your bike didn’t have brakes, you’d have to stop the front tire with your bare foot. We swung off tire ropes into swimming holes in the summer and had snowball fights in the winter, but when the testosterone kicks in, so does the need for more. The seclusion goes from “groovy times” to a pressure cooker that makes you want to start a nuclear war. So, the day our teenage years began, we took our cold, bleak, lame environment and magically converted it into Funtown by using drugs. We also started a club that we pretended was a gang.

Steve (hat), Dogboy (curly hair), and me in a photo booth where we’d try to not laugh for as long as possible. (1986)

Half the students at my high school were the children of British expats, and the other half were Canadian farmers’ kids. Our crew consisted of about a dozen ornery misfits from both sides. We called ourselves the Monks because we were loosely divided into mods (a now-esoteric subculture that was like punk but based more on neatly dressed, working-class 1960s British soul fans) and punks, though there were quite a few hosers (Canadian rednecks). Our crew ran the gamut. There was a huge basketball player with a harelip named Marty, a male-model-looking kid we thought was ugly so we called him Dogboy, and the Fonzarelli of the group, Steve Durand. Lawrence McCallister was a mod and so was his buddy John. We called John Pukey Stallion because he always threw up at parties and never got laid. We weren’t part of the school’s social hierarchy and had carved our own niche as the weird kids.

Being fucking idiots was very important to us. If anyone farted or burped without saying “safety” before someone else called “slut,” everyone in the gang got to beat the poo-stuffings out of him until he could name five breakfast cereals. Unfortunately, guys started memorizing cereal lists, so we were forced to switch it to chocolate bars to keep things interesting. This was the early stages of a career devoted to troublemaking. Our motto was, “It ain’t shit ’til it hits the fan” but the bully from The Simpsons later said it much better when he asked Bart, “If no one gets mad, are you really being bad?”

Drugs enhanced this lifestyle, especially acid. We’d drop a tab around eight o’clock at night and go walk around a boring landscape that had blissfully transformed into a place worth visiting. I acquired X-ray vision to see through houses and observe how people lived when they didn’t know they were being watched. We stole hovercrafts and walked through trees. One time, Pukey’s head was a chicken.

My favorite LSD trip happened when I was fifteen. It was me, Steve, Dogboy, and Marty. We met after dinner behind our high school, and Steve pulled a sheet of about ten tabs from his wallet. As we each put one of the tiny square papers on our tongues, Dogboy said to Steve, “Let me see your driver’s license.” Steve pulled it out and Dogboy fell to the ground laughing. Steve always went cross-eyed in his ID pictures and eventually we made it a tradition—even for the yearbook. Soon we were all sharing our driver’s licenses and laughing at them, but I noticed something strange about Marty when he saw his. He looked disturbed. Marty’s harelip was obvious, but we’d known him for so long we couldn’t see it. Now I was seeing it. It was more than a single harelip; it was a full, lustrous, head-of-harelip. “That’s kind of a bad trip,” Marty said after quietly looking at the picture on his license. Then he put it back in his wallet and decided to move on.

We wandered over to a big hill by the football field where we used to punch each other in the nuts and we lay down to stare up at the night sky. It was a beautiful spring night, and the moon was so bright, we could see all the clouds perfectly. I realized I was tripping balls. “Holy shit,” I said to Marty as Steve and Dogboy continued to laugh at their licenses. “Do you see octagons?” The entire sky was made up of eight-sided geometry-defying shapes all turning in the same direction like cogs. It was a mosaic honeycomb of shapes that seamlessly rotated in unison, and I wanted to know if it was just me.

“Yes!” Marty said. “I see it, too.”

Now I was really confused. “Whoa,” I said. “Now, that is a fucking trip and a half. I get how I can be hallucinating something, but how can you be seeing the same thing? That’s like us having the same dream.”

Then he asked, “You know those weird desk toys where there’s a plastic board made up of steel pins, like a bed of nails kind of but they move?”

“Er, kind of?” I replied.

“You push your hand on one side,” he explained further, “and then your hand imprint is on the other side.”

I finally got what he was talking about. “I think it’s called Pin Art,” I said.

“That’s it!” he said excitedly. “And if you put your face on one side, the pins appear on the other side as an imprint of your face.” I didn’t know where he was going with this and I was getting nervous. Then he said, “That’s what I see in the sky. Only it’s God doing the impressions of your face.” Then he fucking turns to me and says, about a foot away from my ear hole, “Whatever face comes out the other end, that’s your face. Do you understand?”

I was desperate to get off this topic and nervously said, “Yeah, yeah, I get it. Hey! That cloud looks like Garfield taking a shit. You see that?”

He wasn’t having it, and he got up on one elbow so we were face-to-face. “No, man, I’m serious,” he said. “I’m going to ask you tomorrow if you really do get it, because it’s important.” I could feel a bad trip starting to bubble from my toes and surge up my body, so I sprang upright and said, “Let’s sneak onto the golf course,” to which Steve and Dogboy yelled, “Yeah!”

Those guys usually got all Beavis and Butthead on acid, and I envied that. For me, acid was like having a thousand eyes and twenty million ears that could hear every conversation in the world at once. I think that’s God’s Pin Art way of saying, “Stick to booze,” but every time God spoke, I put my fingers in my ears and said, “La la la. I can’t hear you. Doo dee dee. Not listening to you.”

I was rattled by Marty’s provocations for the rest of the night, but I had shaken the bad trip and was able to file his heavy vibes away under No Fucking Way Are We Ever Going There Again for as Long as We Shall Live.

The Kanata Golf and Country Club was in the upper-class section of Nowhere and we were well-known by the security staff. Tonight it was beautifully lit up by the moon and we all felt fearless. We were all such old hats at sneaking into stuff, we actually preferred it when they chased us. Steve would do karate moves and run in circles like he was training to be a Keystone Kop. We were bored brats who were desperate to get back to all the danger and excitement our immigrant parents had rescued us from. Adding acid to this game was like colorizing a black-and-white movie. We ran up and down hills and tossed flags like javelins. We threw garbage cans in the water and climbed trees as if they were made of stairs. We had the agility of Olympic monkeys and the whole thing was such a riot, we started laughing uncontrollably.

Then it happened.

Steve was bouncing along and saw a small circle of mud that was about two feet in diameter. Without a second thought he jumped on it, expecting a small “splatch” and maybe a slightly muddy toe. Instead his entire body vanished into the atmosphere and the only thing left was his disembodied head sitting there on top of the puddle.

Do you get what I’m telling you?

His body was gone. Disappeared.

If you were a Nobel Prize–winning physicist you would have been confused. We were stupid kids on fucking acid. Ergo, we completely lost our shit. After screaming “What the fuck!?” about seven hundred times, I calmed down a bit and started to get mad at society for having such technology. “Why is it okay to annihilate people’s torsos and limbs using some kind of invisible death ray? I understand security can’t tolerate trespassers and I wouldn’t have complained if we were kicked out or arrested, but obliterated with a space gun? They shoot your body off if you walk on a golf course after hours? How long have they had this technology? Why isn’t there more blood? The military are the only ones who should be able to use such guns—not that fat rent-a-cop with the woman’s mustache! What if he gets drunk? He could end civilization! I’m going to fight for Body Gun–control legislation when I grow up.”

My mind was racing.

Marty was bewildered and laughing but in control. Dogboy and I were gone and had begun howling with confusion. Steve had been murdered. We were both sitting on our haunches with our arms outstretched screaming, “Whaaaat!?” over and over.

Steve knew how important it was to laugh at a time like this—especially if you’re not actually dead. He authoritatively said, “I’m all right. You can laugh,” and while still having no idea what happened to his body, Dogboy and I both fell back and laughed our heads off with no holds barred. I felt like my teeth were cumming. As we both pounded the grass and continued roaring, Steve commanded Marty to get him out. Being the legal giant that he is, Marty had no problem reaching into the muck, grabbing Steve by the armpits, and hoisting his mud-dripping body from what now appeared to be a perfectly cylindrical hole designed for people to fall into.

Then Steve said, “It’s shit,” and the laughter went to a whole ’nother level. But Steve wasn’t laughing. “I’m not high anymore,” he said like a science teacher. The adrenaline had burned the lysergic acid diethylamide out of his system, and he was completely sober. As Steve washed all his clothes in a nearby creek, we calmed down enough to put the pieces together:

A golf course needs to have plenty of manure around to maintain perfect lawns, but you can’t have a huge mountain of manure sitting there while people play. So, they had these cylindrical containers drilled into the ground. The holes are less of an eyesore and can still hold enough fertilizer for the groundskeepers.

We all walked back to Steve’s house with him sopping wet but feces-free.

As Steve tried to explain to his mom what happened, we snuck downstairs to watch TV. He had a shower and came down later with new clothes on and a small joint we quietly and carefully smoked in the laundry room. As a particularly unfunny episode of Who’s the Boss? droned in the background, Steve’s buzz came back and I explained to him how I thought his entire body had gone flying off into the forest, leaving his head working but unattended.

As the laughter started up again, I considered drawing connections to cosmic exchanges and how Marty and I had the same hallucination earlier, but my mind snapped shut against it. Life’s too short to risk getting serious.

Honest and funny memoir
By Archer
I discovered Gavin after listening to his Free Speech podcast, and after that The Gavin McInnes Show. This book serves as a good base for a lot of what he talks about today, which is always completely honest and uncensored. It's a cliche to say that Gavin doesn't care what people think about him, but it's actually true about him. It's refreshing to read the works of someone who has lost a lot for being brutally honest but never backs down or apologizes, because he believes in what he does. Gavin says a lot of things that other people think to themselves but are afraid to say out loud. Some people are highly offended by his candor, as evidenced by the negative reviews for this book, although as you might expect, none of them are Verified Purchases on Amazon. The fact that Gavin keeps doing what he's doing despite this (usually manufactured manufactured) outrage is a testament to how lucky our society is to have him. Stay cool man.

Great read
By Brazil
I'd never heard of Gavin until I saw him on Red Eye (Fox News 3AM est.) . He has since become one of my favorite guests (following closley behind Jim Norton); his Scottish accent cracks me up.

Book was good, made me laugh a few times. But it's not for the feint of heart...it's often times quite filthy.

Here's a test as to whether you will like the humor in this book; if it makes you smile then get the book; if you find this juvenile then you may want to pass: "I don't mind women breast feeding in public, but they never wink back at ya."

Call me pig, but that's funny!

Wish the book was longer but that doesn't mean it was incomplete, I just enjoyed reading his anecdotes about his life that much.

The take home message is pretty much this: party all you want as a kid, but grow the hell up when you start getting old. You think a hangover is bad when you're 20? Wait until you hit 40 and suffer through a 3 day hangover.

Heroin = The Devil

Gavin is great!
By J. Peterman
I've always held a soft spot in my heart for Gavin McInnes ever since I got his Do's and Don'ts book as an X-Mas gift in high school and spent months re-reading it and laughing so hard I'd cry. He's an a-hole, but a completely funny a-hole, and those are the best kind.
I was bummed when he left Vice because it's been a total bust ever since, but fortunately Gavin's managed to pull off a million other projects that continually remind me how awesome he is. When I found out about his book coming out I pre-ordered it and received it the day it came out. I'm just now taking a break from my four hour marathon of reading it. Um, it's great? Each chapter is a different story from his life, and he retells it hilariously and with such honesty. I laughed, I almost puked, I nearly cried. I wanted to write something like, "Gavin is living proof that you can do whatever you want as long as you're willing to put everything you got into it and not care what anyone else thinks about it", but that sounds really sappy. Sorry. Pretty much, Gavin rules. Just buy it?
