Quite a tough read, but not finished yet

I'm struggling with this book a bit. I do have some research background allowing me to relate concepts to the real world. But I'm already starting to feel there's nowhere near enough examples to make this stick. Accepting that the research principles can apply across a spectrum of disciplines, it would still be useful to have more real-world examples. I frequently read something many times before making the connection with something I know quite well. If more practical examples had been given, I would have made the connection a lot quicker, and I believe someone new to research would get the gist of the language and methods a lot quicker.

I like the structure of this book though, and feel confident that I will use it time and time again.

About the Author
Ann Charters received her B.A. at Berkeley and her Ph.D. at Columbia. She first met Kerouac at a poetry reading in Berkeley in 1956, and compiled a comprehensive bibliography of his work in 1967. A professor of English at the University of Connecticut, she is also the editor of Selected Letters of Jack Kerouac and the Portable Kerouac Reader, and the author of Beats and Company: Portrait of a Literary Generation.

I couldn't put this down

While in college, I had to do a paper on "On The Road" and after reading it, I became absolutely fascinated with Jack Kerouac. I got this book out of the library one day. I think it is excellent. It documents Kerouac's whole life from birth to death and gives the reader a wonderul insight into the "real" Jack Kerouac. I literally could not put this down.

A Biography Worth the Read!

Ms. Charters did a commenable job putting together
this book. I would rate it right up there with
Nicosia's bio. The author certainly provided a lot
of background info and did a compelling job of
helping me get a better understanding of the social
climate which Kerouac & friends had to contend with
and conquer. My only complaint is that her writing style
sometimes lapses into a style a little too closely allied
with that of her subject, but given the subject matter, that is
understandable. I would recommend this book for those of
you who have found Kerouac's writings to be enjoyable.

Time For A New Biography

Although there's quite a few bio's of Jack out there, it's unfortunate that the majority of them are sub standard. I read this decades ago and remembered it fondly, but a careful re-reading has brought out all the defects. Charters evidently couldn't quote from the sources, so what remains is a botch of a biography. There's really nothing here substantial, and Charters is reduced to re-wording the books... She also has the ingratiating habit of putting herself in quite a few scenes. Yet she's the only one of Kerouac's many biographers that actually met the man, and her telling of meeting him to do his bibliography is a good representation of the mans sad later years. Thus the need to repeat head-shaking incidents, ad nauseam, is avoided... Kerouac's wife Stella and his mother weren't happy with the first edition of this book, as it reported that Jack's sister Nin committed suicide (the woman died of a heart attack). Nicosia's is the far better bio, but it sags under its own bloated grandiosity. Brinkley was supposed to the Authorized Biography, but evidently that fell through. I feel his would've been the best. But we'll never know.

I bought this book because I like to check my friend's competition .... I expected to get a bunch of "be romantic/be a nice guy" BS advice, and I wasn't dissappointed. If you want to be taught how to act like a chump, and possibly get walked on like a doormat, then this book will help you. Otherwise, you're better off buying a book like "Nice Guys And Players", "The Machiavellian's Guide To Womanizing" or "How To Suceed With Women".
Women, whether they're Asian or not, operate in similar ways. You're not gonna find much in here that will help you-- unless of course you want to become the man who wines and dines the woman, while another guy wines and grinds her for you.

Written by an intelligent sensitive Asian woman who displays understanding and wisdom. Full of practical advice, lots of quotes from Asian ladies, and good reading. The author is especially good on understanding and explaining the differences between varied Asian cultures and countries -- China, Korea, Japan, Thailand and the Philippines. Highly recommended.

Not bad overall, I guess

I found it hard to rate this book because the amount of new information you'll learn from this book really depends on your level of intelligence and social skills. A smart and educated guy who is already more or less skilled in the area of etiquette will find SOME useful information such as approriate table manners and rules for meeting family members in various Asian cultures, as well as how to recognize personality traits that are often attributed to many Asian women (such as being shy, demure and the very mistaken perception of Asian submissiveness)and see them for what they really are. Some advice that she gives really is a no-brainer, such as "Don't refer to Asians as 'Orientals'" or how when responding to her personals ad, don't say how much you love Asian women, or not asking a lady if she speaks English as an opening line, etc...DUH! Really! On the other hand, the author and the women she interviewed have must have encountered this sort of thing frequently or she wouldn't have felt the need to include this kind of advice in her book. And of course what's common sense to one person may be an entirely new way of thinking to another. And a lot of the advice she gives on how to be attractive to women and how to approach them really are applicable to women generally -- Asian or not.
My only other criticism about this book is regarding the Asian women she interviewed, and how representative some of their views were about Asian women in general. I was particularly astounded at how many of the women, when describing their ideal man, mentioned the exceptionally high income levels of the man they sought. The author claims to have interviewed a variety of Asian women of a broad age range and who were both immigrants of many Asian nationalities as well as Asian Americans. Yet this kind of information makes me wonder if a very high number (if not most) of these women were twenty and thirtysomething Americanized Asian women living and working in upscale New York, which would't be too surprising since these are the ones she probably knows most. It also would have been nice to have just a bit more of this kind of information about each of the women she quotes since she relies on a LOT of these and would have enabled me to put an opinion in perspective. Yes, Education is valued in just about every Asian culture and the more education and higher income you have, the better your chances of attracting a quality woman. But I know of two guys who are married to Fillipinas, one who works as a mechanic, the other a roofer.
I really would like to have given this book three and a HALF stars, but this option wasn't allowed. All in all, this book is adequate and informative and yes, I would recommend it.

About the Author
Shoshichi Kobayashi was born January 4, 1932 in Kofu, Japan. After obtaining his mathematics degree from the University of Tokyo and his Ph.D. from the University of Washington, Seattle, he held positions at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, at MIT and at the University of British Columbia between 1956 and 1962, and then moved to the University of California, Berkeley, where he is now Professor in the Graduate School.
Kobayashi's research spans the areas of differential geometry of real and complex variables, and his numerous resulting publications include several book: Foundations of Differential Geometry with K. Nomizu, Hyperbolic Complex Manifolds and Holomorphic Mappings and Differential Geometry of Complex Vector Bundles.

The Definitive Reference for Four Decades

The two-volume set by Kobayashi and Nomizu has remained the definitive reference for differential geometers since their appearance in 1963(volume 1) and 1969 (volume 2). Over the decades, many readers have developed a love/hate relationship with these difficult, challenging texts. For example, in a 2006 edition of a competing text, the author remarked that "every differential geometer must have a copy of these tomes," but followed this judgment by observing that "their effective usefulness had probably passed away," comparing them to the infamously difficult texts of Bourbaki.

As a practicing differential geometer, I would argue that Kobayashi and Nomizu remains an essential reference even today, for a number of reasons.

Volume 1 still remains unrivalled for its concise, mathematically rigorous presentation of the theory of connections on a principal fibre bundle---material that is absolutely essential to the reader who desires to understand gauge theories in modern physics. The essential core of Volume 1 is the development of connections on a principal fibre bundle, linear and affine connections, and the special case of Riemannian connections, where a connection must be "fitted" to the geometry that results from a pre-existing metric tensor on the underlying manifold, M.

Volume 2 offers thorough introductions to a number of classical topics, including submanifold theory, Morse index theory, homogeneous and symmetric spaces, characteristic classes, and complex manifolds.

The influence of the texts by Kobayashi and Nomizu can be seen in most of the subsequent differential geometry texts, both in organization and content, and especially in the adoption of notation. If there was a particularly fine point in your favorite introductory differential geometry text that you never completely understood, the odds are good that you will find the answer, fully developed and presented at an entirely different mathematical level, in Kobayashi and Nomizu. It is not an unreasonable analogy to say that learning differential geometry without having your own copy of Kobayashi/Nomizu is like studying literature in the complete ignorance of Shakespeare.

Let there be no mistake about the advanced level of these texts. The Preface to Volume 1 clearly states that the authors presume the reader to be familiar with differentiable manifolds, Lie groups, and fibre bundles, as developed in the (now classical) texts by Chevalley, Montgomery-Zippin, Pontrjagin, and Steenrod. Today's reader is far more likely to have studied these subject from more recent books like those by Boothby, Hall, and Husemoller, but whatever the source, a familiarity IS presumed. The "lightning review" provided in Chapter I of Volume 1 will be extremely tough going for the reader who is new to these topics. It should also be noted that in 329 pages of Volume 1 and 470 pages of Volume 2, not a single diagram or picture is to be found! Those drawn to geometry for its visual aspects will find Kobayashi/Nomizu totally lacking in visual aids.

As with so many classic references in mathematics, the hardbound edition of Kobayashi and Nomizu is no longer in print. Copies appear sporadically on the used book market at absolutely obscene prices. The Classics Library paperback edition is still available, but the serious student will find that the paperbacks simply do not fare well under serious, sustained use.

I took an advanced course in differential geometry (post masters advanced) using this text in 1971, and the reviewers comments about how advanced the book is are on the mark. This was my first introduction to Lie groups and Fiber bundles and it was difficult to grasp.
This is definitely not a beginners book, but an invaluable reference. I still have mine 41 years later and would not part with it.

I rate it lower than a 5 simply because it is not the book for everyone.

I thought the Badass book was badass, only to find out the book was only making money from the name of another title that is not found in amazon book store.
I would not recommend this I the book. I thought I was buying a how to, in stead I bought a comic book.

Don't Be A Sucker

This is the most worthless piece of work I have ever read. It's hard to believe that anyone could write so many words and say absolutely nothing that makes any sense when you try to figure out how to apply the gibberish. You would be better off offering a girl a drink at a bar and when she said no ask her if she just wanted the cash instead. Save your money on this one boys!

Maybe Not What You'd Expect

My first thoughts about this ebook upon seeing the cover and reading the description were that it would be a book about how to pick up women. This is simply not the case. This ebook is primarily a short self-improvement guide.

The ebook is split into 3 main sections. Part 1 gives you the 7 basic principles of TAO and Part 2 tells you how you could implement these principals into your life. These first 2 sections are very `wishy washy' and feel like there is no real direction. As you're reading through you get the feeling that although a lot is being said there isn't actually all that much information, almost akin to the `management speak' we all know and despise from offices around the world. Parts 1 and 2 are the main meat and bones of the book taking up over ⅔ of the ebook and the only real message to come from this is to be more self-aware and aware of the world around you.

By the time I finally got to Part 3 I was on the verge of giving up but thankfully, I persisted. Because Part 3 is where the ebook really proves it's worth. Part 3 is written by Jessica Taylor. She writes examples of how all of the steps you've read about have been implemented by men in her life. This is where the ebook finally begins to make sense as you see real-life examples and begin to see for yourself how you could implement the methods taught. As these examples are where the ebook finally makes sense I can't help but think it would have been much easier to digest and comprehend if they were interlaced within Parts 1 and 2, rather than having to wait until the end for it to make any real sense.

The ebook itself looks very professional. I read it on my kindle and found it looked fantastic. It was heavily sectioned to help break the monotony of educational text and had the odd image to denote some sections.

Upon completion of the ebook I was encouraged to download the 7 day action plan free of charge. This ebook is intended to give more guidance on how to incorporate into your life the principles already learnt. Personally I wasn't a fan of this addition as I felt it belittled the main ebook. It attempts to hammer home the message but uses flimsy and unrealistic examples and adds no real value. The examples from Jessica Taylor's part of the ebook should have been the lasting message, not this workbook.

Overall it is an average read rescued by the stories from Jessica Taylor. For somebody stuck in a romantic lull I can see how this has the potential to lift them to a high crested wave of love, but be warned, if you're looking for a quick-fix way to get with women then this isn't for you as this method requires real commitment.

Richer Vision

If you are a writer -- of humor, of drama, of crime, of politics, of movies, of science, of life -- you should OWN, READ, AND STUDY this book. I sold my first joke around 1967, and have sold jokes and cartoon ideas to national and local comics, greeting card companies, and cartoonists. This book helped me see The Funny in more places.

This book helps you recognize, save, and use the material the universe gives you every hour of every day. The best writers are those who can see the universe with great precision, through their own idiosyncratic eyeballs, then relay what they saw to the reader,to the listener. This book helps you do that. JR tells you how to notice and record The Funny/The Drama/The McGuffin/The blue mold in the petri dish.

This book could be invaluable as a supplemental text in writing courses, as it shows the writer how to abandon bland vague text strings and capture specifics. A remark on page 27 captures its essential message, couched in JR's humorist's voic: "From this day forth, resolve to act like a trained noticer."

One caveat: Robertson is a humorist and I found some of the humor in this book exceeded my quota for "country and corn pone" humor. But I did not buy it for the jokes; I bought it to learn about her method of noticing and recording the universe. Every day I see and write more clearly because I read this book. Do not deny yourself this superb tool.

She will draw you into the humor of her "flat out funny" view of the world

Jeanne Robertson is one of those special "right-brained" thinkers who can draw you into the humor of her "flat out funny view of the world." As she states so often, we can all choose to see the humor in situations. And, she does. She is not a comedian - telling joke after joke. She is a humorist and does just that. She helps you see the humor in real life with real people with real every day situations. It is so refreshing and will life your spirits before you know. She shares her formula for doing that in her book "Don't Let the Funny Stuff Get Away." By reading this book a number of times already and watching her DVDs, I am fascinated by her skillful and very natural delivery. I highly recommend her work here for speakers and for teachers of all ages, big kids too, to help people laugh and perhaps in the process learn something. Great job Jeanne.
