I feel this is an outstanding book on several levels. It is medically accurate. It explains medical terms and conditions clearly and avoids both medical "jargon" and oversimplification. The writer is able to convey the realities and challenges of raising children with autism in a way that could only be achieved by a parent who has "been and done." It is a book that will touch and teach anyone who reads it. It is a beacon of empathy and reassurance to parents and family of children with autism. It acknowledges that the road ahead will be long and difficult in many places, and yet studded with times of unexpected and unforeseeable beauty and joy. In this way it put me in mind of a description of hiking the Appalachian Trail.
For professionals, it is a reminder of what these families have to deal with on a day-to-day basis beyond the clinical appointments, the testing, the therapy interventions, the intensive ongoing home care that is prescribed, and all of the other things that are prescribed in an effort to help. In her matter-of-fact accounts of the day-to-day facts of life for her and her children, she reminds us of the challenges of everyday life that may not be not considered (or may be forgotten) by those who don't have to get "up close and personal" with autism 24/7.
This book documents the grace, kindness, dignity and understanding that families of autistic children must demonstrate on a daily basis to those members of the general public who through word and action can so readily demonstrate their own ignorance, insensitivity and even cruelty in their interactions with autistic children and their families.
Above all, this book is a testament to importance of loving parenting. It highlights the central tenet of unconditional love. It alludes to the fact that children with autism, like all children, are doing the best they can, generally behave exactly the way they are taught, and can feel and respond to love. The author acknowledges the frustrations, failings and fatigue that every parent feels at some time or other, and she suggests to the reader that experiencing failure is not the same as being a failure. She acknowledges the importance of her faith. She conveys the story of her family without any sense of self-pity or resignation. but rather with an attitude of confidence and reassurance that is inspirational and refreshing. I feel this book would be beneficial reading to anyone who is or might someday find themselves dealing with autism--in short, anyone at all.

Occupation therapist thinks book is a must read for parents--all parents!

As a Pediatric Occupational Therapist, I have tried to show parents of my clients that first off- they have a child that requires parenting like any other child- which includes schedules, limits, help with eating dressing, bathing, hygiene, and manners, playtime and bedtime. It is an exhausting job. But, special needs children will need additional support, help and understanding.
Delia Samuel has written the parenting manual that captures this important concept. In fact, I think all parents can benefit from her 45 chapters especially-Take Time Outs-- You Will Need Them, Play, Play and Play Some More, and Practice Does Make Perfect.
From an occupational therapist perspective, the most important chapter, besides Sensory Problems, is My Journey To Acceptance. This is an important insight and one that takes time to reach. I have worked with parents in denial, angry parents, depressed parents and with those that had reached acceptance of their child’s special qualities. I never commented to the parents on their attitudes, as I knew they were dealing with a life changing realization at their own pace. But, the parents who had reached the acceptance level, not only had more secure children but could tap into their intuition, based on knowing their child better than anyone else, and work with me in partnership setting up creative strategies to help their children develop skills.
This is an important parenting guide for parents of special needs children written by someone who has and does live it -- as a single working mother raising her own two special sons. I highly recommend this book to parents of not only children of special needs or autistic children but to all parents because each child is special in some way, some just more so.

This book is a beautifully honest window into the day-to-day challenges of caring for children with special needs; however, it has the capability to bless anyone that picks it up. It is a story of hope, faith, and perseverance in the face of daunting challenges. It will bring tears and laughter – sometimes in the same chapter - but most importantly, it will inspire you.

The book can be read straight through or even a chapter a day for strategies, pick-me-ups, and gentle reminders to never give up on yourself or those you love. I loved the quotes at the beginning of each chapter – they are simple, yet beautiful mantras to live by. This story truly embodies Dan Reeves’ quote: “Difficulties in life are intended to make us better, not bitter.”

The author has poured her heart into these pages and courageously shared her struggles and triumphs. She has opened the floor for honest discussion and hopefully change in a subject that demands our attention. It is past time we start understanding and demonstrating the love and acceptance that children of special needs require – whether it be in our families, our schools, or the general public. This amazing story is an excellent step in that direction and a refreshing account of unconditional love.

Maci's Review - Bad Magic by Pseudonymous Bosch is about Clay and him not being a magician. Ever since Clay's brother Max-Earnest did a trick and disappeared Clay has renounced Magic. When Clay's English class does a production of The Tempest and afterwards Clay can't write about it because it is about Magic, Clays teacher gives him a journal to write in so that he can get credit. When Clay Writes MAGIC SUCKS! in the journal and it appears on the wall at school the next day Clay is accused of putting it there and has to attend a summer camp for troubled youth on an island with a volcano to be able to return to school next fall. But when Clay gets to the island he finds that something strange is happening, there are strange coincidences with The Tempest and not to mention the strange way the camp is run. I was really excited to read a book by Pseudonymous Bosch, and it was good. I have read the first book in the Secret Series and have always wanted to read the rest of them. This book seems to relate to them but it is not necessary to read the Secret Series first. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes The Secret Series or anyone who likes Magic.

Zoe's Review - When I first learned that this book was coming out and it was from Pseudonymous Bosch I knew that it had to be good, and it was. Even though it is not related to the secret series, it makes some really cool references to it. This book is about Clay, his parents think that it is best to let him parent himself thinking that they over parented Clay's older brother Max-Ernest. When Clay gets in trouble for supposedly graffitiing the school wall his parents for once decided to punish him for it by sending him to a camp for troubled kids. While Clay is wary of this camp, his parents are perfectly happy sending him there. At this camp Clay has to learn how to care for a pet llama and starts to think that there is more then meets the eye to the camp. This book always has you guessing even when you think that you have figured it out and it is captivating from the very beginning. The ending of the book is satisfying but leaves it open for the next one. If you liked the Secret Series by Pseudonymous Bosch or Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket, then you will like this.

Better Than the "Secret Series"; A Study in Misdirection

I really liked this book, but for lots of reasons that no one else seems to be mentioning.

First things first - I did not care that much for the first two volumes of the "Secret Series". The narrator was way too arch and intrusive for me, and I just didn't respond well to the antic cleverness of it all. I get it that lots of kid readers love that series and its comfortable jokiness, and I think that's wonderful, but it was just a bit too much for me. "Bad Magic" starts along the same lines, with pretty much the same cutesy narrator. But then, a few chapters in, just like that, the narrator for all practical purposes disappears into the background so that we can get to the great story that is being told.

That's terrific because this book, and the series it opens, is for older readers who I suspect may have grown out of "Secret Series" type tales. For the same reason, this book doesn't feel at all like the Lemony Snicket books that feature the Baudelaires. "Bad Magic" is more complex and character driven and less dependent on narrator wordplay. It has a complex plot with a lot of subtlety, no silliness and no zany action/adventure.

Here, we have passing reference to all kinds of pop icons, but the recurring reference is to Shakespeare's "Tempest". There are lots of obvious references but also many more subtle parallels that connect and reconnect as the story progresses; the result is a big step up in interest and depth. This step up in interest is complemented by the fact that much more attention is paid to characters and character development, motivations, feelings, and the interactions of the various players.

MILD SPOILERS. At the outset this looks like a "Holes" kind of book involving an island work camp for juvenile delinquents. It quickly transforms into a magical tale, and owes more to Peter Pan's Lost Boys, or to shows like "Lost", than anything else.

NO MORE SPOILERS, but trust me on this - the book moves through a couple of stages, each more interesting than the last. Just when you think it is "this" kind of book it becomes "that" kind of book. And that's not because the author doesn't know where he is going or has lost control of the narrative. Rather, it's more like the author is tricking the reader, (the magician's art of "misdirection"), with different styles and plots before truly revealing which way, and how magically and fantastically, this book is going to go.

The result is interesting and rewarding. The book is on an entirely different plane than other Bosch books. I would not be reluctant to revisit this author.

A Book That's Both Too Much and Too Little

I must confess. I have had this book forever. OK, that's stretching the truth a little bit, but I received this book back in July of 2014. Then, as it happens sometimes, it fell off of my e-reader. So when I was trying to catch up with my reviews, I realized I had to check it out of the library. I've tried to read it twice, and then seriously buckled down and finished it. It is due back to the libary on Friday after checking it out ten times.

So that beginning sounds a bit ominous, doesn't it? I don't usually DNF books if I can help it, and since I got the book for free (originally!) in order to review it, I knew I had to Git R Done.

At its heart, the story is wonderful. Clay gets sent to a summer camp in the middle of nowhere because of something he does at school. He's dropped into the middle of this crazy place, and he has to try and fit in while figuring out exactly what is even going on. There are so many rules, a ghost story, the tale of the rich benefactor who lived there long ago, and a llama who seems to understand Spanish. That should be enough of a mystery, but there's a lot more. Clay's missing brother, their mutual love/hate relationship with magic, a mysterious journal, and The Tempest. Honestly, there's so much going on that it gets a bit overwhelming - unfortunately, more in a boring kind of way.

Once I was finished, I realized that the main problem I had with this book was that it is a set-up for books to come. Well, I have to assume that, of course, but it sure felt that way. Plus all of the protracted absurdity really got a little tiresome. OK, I get it. Crazy stuff abounds. I don't want you to think that the writing isn't good, but it is. It just needed to be dialed back a bit, while increasing the more interesting parts. I'll let you figure out which are which.

The book covers the basics in an understandable and logical order...it is well-organized and complete. Chapter 3, The Infrastructure of Managed Care, is very interesting and informative - is very good at describing how managed care organizations do what they do. Chapter 4, Provider Networks, and Chapter 5, Purchasers and Managed Care, are very good chapters with good descriptions of provider networks and purchasing arrangements. (Reviewed by Bernard J. To read Douglas Bauer's lovely ruminations on the art of literary fiction is to be transported back to those intimate seminars one never quite appreciated enough in school. How refreshing it is to read a book about fiction writing that speaks of nothing so crass as hooking readers or marketing oneself or conforming to genre specifications. Instead, Bauer contemplates one element of fiction per chapter, opening with openings and ending with endings. What he finds, whether developing dialogue or character or sentiment, is that it is crucial to say neither too much nor too little. A writer must have the balance of an acrobat, and be able to navigate the gray zones. An opening should "beckon" readers. Dialogue works best when one eliminates many of the words. "Villainous, ignoble, antiheroic characters" should be presented sympathetically; "admirable, noble, heroic characters" should be flawed. "Any ending that succeeds both culminates and at the same time continues the story," he says. While "schlock is primarily interested in the breathless depiction of the drama," Bauer (and literary fiction) is interested in "the richness of the resonance." And though he has written a primer on the craft, bad news: "No amount of tweaking and altering ... can rescue a piece of elementally flawed writing." Drawing on lectures for the Bennington College Writing Seminar, where he is a core faculty member, novelist, essayist, and lecturer Bauer (Dexterity) presents a unique and refreshing approach toward writing realistic fiction, arguing that while the process of writing is a craft and ultimately a business that can be learned, talent must be the underlying foundation. Talent comes from within, he argues, but it can be nurtured and developed through determination, rigorous daily practice, and the habit of reading widely with a discriminating eye. Bauer proceeds through the usual steps, discussing plot and character development, dialog, setting, and resolution, but the way he dissects selected samples of contemporary fiction to reveal the architecture of the passage will inspire his readers to deeper critical attention and thought. Illuminating for any writer or reader of realistic fiction

If you want to understand more about how a good piece of realistic fiction is put together, read this book. It provides both rules and the wisdom to make it clear that if a writer is on the right track, he or she can go ahead and break those rules.
*The Stuff of Fiction* explains to ordinary readers what has gone wrong when a book suddenly turns unsatisfying (for example, when it doesn't know when to end), the book gives new writers a set of guidelines to keep in the back of their heads while they are slaving away, a kind of frame to check the day's work against, and the book offers experienced writers a welcome articulation of the things they have been trying to do since they began this strange line of work.
The book explains how to start a story (maybe at the beginning, maybe not), how to write dialogue that doesn't thud or crawl on the page, how to create characters with mixed blessings and curses (like a human being in other words), how to give drama its necessary subtlety, how to create sentiment not sentimentality (a discourse on how to write with taste, which is kind of like explaining how to play jazz, but amazingly it really works), and how to end a story. Bauer uses examples effectively--taking apart work from Denis Johnson, Toni Morrison, Alice Munro, and yes Wm. Shakespeare--and writes directly but also elegantly.
Douglas Bauer is the author of three novels, each of which I loved (he never does the same thing twice, but since the prose always contains the same steely twists, you know it is the same guy), and teaches at the Bennington MFA Program.
Writing programs, take note--instructors can cut to the chase by judicious use of this handy and straightforward volume. I won't say it's the Strunk and White of contemporary realistic fiction writing--only time can tell that--but it's as close as I can imagine. Full disclosure requires me to say that I know Douglas Bauer personally, but honestly, I would say all of this if I didn't know him. It is a terrific and useful volume.

What a beautiful book! I can't remember when I've read such an eloquent work about the craft of writing, making me wonder why any of us pay any attention to advice about writing which arrives in less artful form ("the long half-life of sorrow" is one of the many well-turned phrases which clings to memory). This essay collection (nonfiction writers have as much to gain as fiction writers from reading the book) is elegant, compelling, succinct, and breathtakingly clear without being condescending. The author (who also writes gorgeous fiction) covers all of the most important aspects of craft--openings, dialogue, character, high events (dramatic moments), sentiment vs. sentimentality, and closings, and includes advice from the best of the other writing "gurus" and wonderful passages of first-rate literature to illustrate points made. The Stuff of Fiction is truly a book for writers at all levels. I felt an immediate need to underline when I began reading; the book made me seriously re-think a novel on which I'm currently working. What more could a writer ask.

Weighing in at a mere 131 pages, Douglas Bauer's book is the Cassius Clay of my craft shelf. And though I am tempted to take this boxing metaphor farther, tempted to say things like, "it floats like a butterfly stings like a bee", and draw parallels between its eight chapters and the eight fast rounds Ali went with Sonny Liston in 65', I'll check myself and simply note the elements of the book that I found most helpful.

The language is so wonderfully straight forward and the examples so clear that I used the chapter on dialogue with a group of high level 8th graders who are working with me on an independent study. We were able to have a wonderful conversation about "TV Dialogue" and how we can best to avoid it in our writing. They were quick to point out how rampant this sort of mundane dialogue is in adolescent and young adult fiction.

Along with clear language, the chapters in Bauer's book are concise. Despite their brevity they draw on a wide range of other craft books and essays. In the dialogue chapter, Brauer mentions Dillard's "Notes for Young Writers." A few of my young writers became curious about Dillard and her work. They expressed an interest in this book, and if I wasn't so personally biased against Dillard's other essays I might have taken it on myself.

This anecdote points to the fact that Brauer does not shy away from the words of others on the subject of craft. To the contrary, this book excels at pairing down those words to essential ideas. He draws from Booth's "The Rhetoric of Fiction" and E.M. Foster's "Aspects of the Novel." He quotes from Gardner's "The Art of Fiction" and Joy William's "Why I Write." I am sure that there are others that he mentions, but those are the ones that I personally underlined in the text.

The two most useful chapters for me, the chapters that answered questions I have long harbored concerning fiction, were chapters 5 and 6. These two chapters examine the issues of what Bauer calls "High Points" and "Sentiment versus Sentimentality."

I especially liked his treatment in the chapter, "High Points," of television violence, "the sort of violence with no accompanying long-lasting emotional consequences." It in some ways resembles television dialogue in that it draws the reader's attention to something that has no real importance to the characters or the story. It is interesting to me, as somebody who has not lived in a house with a television for over a decade, to see how television affects the way people write. I also cannot help but to think that it also changes the general public's expectations of stories.

The chapter on sentiment versus sentimentality, cleared up very nicely the differences between the two. I had always thought of sentimentality as something I could recognize, but nothing I could clearly define. I believe Bauer makes a comparison to pornography--we know it when we see it. But he does not stop there; he gives clear examples of how sentimentality can be avoided and points the reader in the direction of people who define this boundary.

"The Stuff of Fiction" is not the end all and be all of craft books. But it is for me at this point one of the most valuable books on craft I have read. It is a book I can draw from as I teach my students about some of the elements of fiction. It is a book that answered some fundamental questions I have had for some years now. Lastly, it is a book that points the reader in the right directions, bringing into view not only some of the great writers and storytellers of the West, but also the great works by others on craft.

I originally reviewed this guide with five stars in 2009. I am much less happy about the guide now, because it has basically not improved during the last six years. Currently, I would say that the best street food advice comes from blogs (eg ieatishootipost). The key problem with the guide is that it is organised around food category. That is pretty ridiculous because the country is not that small. It would have been much better to organise based on location: "So I'm at Tanglin Halt food court, what are the recommended placed here?" Right now you need to wade through the whole list to find the good places you are close to.

I love Asian street food, but the problem in Singapore is that all food is imported. So you will not find the really tasty stuff. The kind of food that is cheap because it is sourced locally, not because it is of poor quality. Sadly, in Singapore, the price of hawker centre food hasn't followed inflation. This means that the hawkers (understandably) do everything to cut cost. This really reduces the quality of the food. So I cannot understand the people that are lyrical about Singapore street food any more. This guides fall into this trap, basically by listing far too many places. The rating system should also be updated so it takes the price of the food into account. I'm not going to go out of my way just to find a S$4 dish on the other side of the island. It might be great food given a S$4 budget, but people so constrained with money probably wouldn't buy this guide in the first place.

For tourists this guide has one useful section and that is the description of the various kinds of hawker centre food available in Singapore. If you are a foodie and want to understand more, this could be one benefit with the current book.

So not more than two stars. I sincerely hope the writer soon realises that time doesn't stand still. He needs to improve the book.

Difficult to use as a guide

Although this book is chock full of information on the food of Singapore it is not organized to be used effectively while visiting as a tourist. It is not cross referenced by specific enough location. It at least needs a cross reference by hawker center.

Most of these reviews were written for extra credit assignments

First of all, you'll notice that most of these reviews were written in December of 2006. Our professor, Cornelia Brentano, one of the authors of this book, used this book for her class in the winter quarter at The University of California, Irvine. We were given extra credit if we wrote a review on Amazon, printed it out, and turned it in for extra credit. We got as much extra credit for turning in a review as we did for writing a 5 page extra credit paper. So of course, many of us chose to write a review.

As for the book itself, it's below average for a text book. I found it a bit boring and repetitive at times. I can't really say I learned much, and it felt like they were just stating the obvious.

Also, I don't think many of the facts or statistics that were given were true. They did not include citations when there should have been citations. Also, this book makes too many generalizations and stupid lists (like those business books for dummies).

The book is written from a very Western viewpoint, and lacks cultural sensitivity. An update to this book would need to expand on the history of marriage and divorce to include other cultures and nationalities. Apparently, history begins with the Greeks and ends in the U.S.

It's been a while since I took the class and read this book, but I hope you found this helpful.

Must read before marriage

Most everything you'd ever wanted to know about divorce is in this book. This book goes full circle from history of divorce, to risk factors, to process, to effects on adults as well as children, to remarriage, and finally to the future of divorce. For anyone going through a divorce I recommend this book as well for people contemplating marriage or just in a serious committed relationship. It will help you to analyze your own relationship for potential risks of divorce. It is a good educational tool for anyone who is contemplating marriage. It gives insight into your own personal risk factors of divorce. A must have for anyone currently in a relationship and who is also planning on marriage or children. It gives you the facts using the most up to date statistics and solid research. The authors Clarke-Stewart and Brentano have done a spectacular job putting together this book.

A very thorough book about the hardships of divorce

This book does an amazing job going through the entire process of divorce from start to finish. The book begins with the history of divorce and ends with the future of divorce. I can honestly say that I have learned so much just by reading this book. Clarke-Stewart and Brentano cover every aspect of divorce in a way that is easy to read and easy to understand. Their knowledge concerning risk factors and effects of divorce is very insightful. The authors do not give brief statements on the many topics of divorce, rather, they go in depth and include many different studies to support their conclusions. After reading this book, it really opened my eyes to what millions of adults and children have to endure because of divorce. It has also made me reevaluate what I want in a marriage and in my future partner. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Behrouz A. Forouzan has more than 32 years of electronics and computer science experience in industry and academia. His industry experience includes designing electronic systems. After leaving the industry, he joined De Anza College as a professor of computer science. Solid Foundation

I really found this book to be an interesting read, as it says, it covers a lot of the basic computer science principles.

As can be expected from a book that covers such a vast number of topics, it doesn't go into all of them in detail, although a few of them seemed to be quite in-depth.

I didn't have a problem with the actual quality of the book(unlike another reviewer), though I definitely think some of the examples could be clearer.

I have a good opinion of this book, I think its quite suitable as a university textbook, which is the purpose for which it was written. But I would definitely recommend it for programmers who maybe haven't done any university courses, a book like this will give insight into how things work behind the scene.

No Quality Assurance

This book shows a lot of detailed process, while doing a poor job of explaining it. The first 50 pages of the book have wrong examples on multiple occasions and obvious grammatical errors. There must have been very little quality assurance performed by the publisher of this book. This is sub-standard to use for college level computer science courses. If I were a professor, I would never use a book that shows wrong examples. This is very, very poor workmanship.

This book needs to be edited properly. The language is awful. As an academic textbook at tertiary level, bad language is unacceptable.
