Seeking to understand the Primitive Baptist churches through their singing

Folks who are theologically inclined tend to try to understand churches by understanding their theology and listening to what is said in books, sermons, and courses.

Beverly Bush Patterson uses another means to understand the Primitive Baptist churches: their music, specifically their songs, songbooks, song tunes, and hymn choices in individual congregations. While not downplaying Primitive Baptist theology and preaching, the author sees their music as a perhaps more reliable means of understanding how theology and doctrine plays out in congregational life.

This includes a detailed analysis of hymn and song choices and hymn tune choices in congregations. And while I'm making this sound dry, this book is anything but dry: it is a good, well-written, well-told analysis of a little-known group in American religious life.

A slightly secondary theme in the book is the role and function of women in Primitive Baptist churches. This isn't an easily done analysis, since women in Primitive Baptist churches operate in a "silent" setting in their churches, neither preaching nor holding offices within the congregations. Patterson seeks to understand how women in these congregations understand their faith, live within the parameters of their theology, and express their faith.

A Unique view of Victorian London

I want to add my voice to those who have given this edition high reviews.
What makes this book unique is that it is a first hand account of the social conditions of poor London city dwellers almost two hundred years ago. It is also a catalog of the methods used in the countless street trades and confidence tricks that have all but disappeared in modern times. A few still existed when I was a child!
This is a far more interesting reading experience than conventional history books, which are written long after the events and therefore rely on comments gathered from distant sources. Unless we choose to believe that the author had reason to deceive us (Julius Caesar comes to mind) we do well to trust contemporary accounts. The book also strikes close to home. Many large cities in Europe, and the USA, suffered similar privations in the same period, and we may be willing to suppose that some of our family forebears were personally affected. Mayhew was the live reporter at the scene.

Richest source ever on Victorian London Laboring Poor

An astoundingly detailed account of life among the poor and on the streets of Victorian London, circa 1850. The personal accounts are amazing and continually surprising in their basic humanity. This book condenses Mayhew's original four-volume work. Sadly it had to leave out a gazillion details of the lives, thoughts, and methods of the rat--flea-fly-cockroach catchers! But it keeps a great long section about how early low-end commercial photographers cheated, bamboozled and otherwise wheedled six-pence out of customers who had no clue about what a photograph was.

Definitely an eye opener!

If you want to know how it was like for the lower working class in London and their daily routines and rituals, this is the book, written by someone who interviewed the ragtag army of merchants and menial workers who ecked out a meager and difficult existence of those days. Makes you appreciate living as it is today.

Complete waste of time

This book is, as my title states, a complete waste of time. When reading through the book, it has the feel of a 2008 R2 book that was hacked and made into a 2012 book. There are countless errors, both technical and grammatical, so many in fact that it's hard to accept what the book says without looking it up to verify it. Just as an example, they mot the maximum supported memory of 2012 Standard incorrect, the book states 32GB max, whereas Microsoft states 4TB. They also stated migration paths from 2008/R2 to 2012 incorrectly as well. These are things that are so basic, seeing them printed incorrectly just doesn't give me much faith in anything else it has to say.

For anyone looking to buy this book, I would highly recommend you wait until the MS Press books, or the Mastering 2012 book is released.

I'm feeling really misled....

So, i'm three chapters into this book. Obviously it's a doozy...we're looking at over 1000 pages.
Reading it carefully, I'm getting very annoyed at the obviousness & repetition of some of this stuff.
I don't need to be told that automatic update will do automatic update. I know that it's in the name, so tell me something I don't know. Secondly - STOP trying to get me in the MS customer experience program. It's like buying a freaking car...you're trying to sell me on something and instead are just aggravating me.
Finally, the biggest and most severe problem I've found & the one that may have me returning the book shortly. The author says:

As with the previous two versions of the operating system, there is no choice as to the file system on the partition. Windows Server 2012 automatically uses the new ReFS file system for all created partitions. ReFS is an improved and updated version of the NTFS file system. You can find more information aboutReFS in Chapter 28, "File System Management and Fault Tolerance."

This is untrue. The system volume is NTFS, NOT ReFS, if that what it's saying. Minimally, it's confusing but I think it's just flat wrong. If the writers got this level of credibility wrong, I'm beginning to suspect everything I'm reading & may soon consider the book a waste of time.

Further, the book is extremely obvious in some places. There are places where I wanted to more detail and the book failed to deliver. I'll have more about what I like / don't like as I go

Not as Good as Previous Unleashed Books

I'm a big fan of the Windows Server Unleashed books. I have purchased editions for Server 2008 and R2 and enjoyed them. I think this time around they were in too much of a hurry.

I'm 23 pages into the book, and on every page there has been some glaring error, from randomly misplaced punctuation to sentences so poorly written I have to read them multiple times and guess what they were trying to say. It looks like it got a quick one-pass proofread before going to the press.

The hallmark of the Unleashed series is that they work with beta versions of the software and try to give a real-world, experienced account of using the software in a production environment. Since this book is so poorly written, I don't have a lot of confidence in the accuracy of its contents.

If you are a fan of socilogical theory and wish to expand your knowledge of the labeling theory concept this book is a good place to start. These 42 case studies provide close examination into the "Careers" of Deviants, offering insights as to how society, through sanctions and stigmatization, molds and shapes each individual's projected path into deviance. the majority of the authors presented rely on Goffman's and Becker's work, but in doing so offer new and expanded theories as to why deviance occurs . A good read.

A new, valuable introduction to Int'L Law

The 7th edition of this classic among student textbooks builds upon the clarity and stile Michael Akehurst was famous for, and gives an up to date introduction to International Law. The author, Peter Malanczuk, Professor of International Law at the University of Amsterdam, included systematic references which will enable the reader to begin a journey into the advanced subjects of the Law - if he/she so wishes. Malanczuks perspective is broad and serves the needs both of students in International Law and in International Relations.

A very good international law book

"Akehurst's Modern Introduction to International Law" by Peter Malanczuk is one of the best books on International Law for scholars and students of law, now a days. The text was re-written by Professor Peter Malanczuk (Erasmus University, Rotterdam) with aditional information based on the new developments like International Environmental Law or International Economic Law.
Certainly the basics of the book correspond to older editions, but new chapters make it a clear example of an "International Law" book than a modest "Introduction".
The text is well written and the concepts are in order. However, definitions about important international legal institutions were missed, for example, International Environmental Law, Custom, etc. These and other definitions are important for students in order to have clarity on the institutions and the subject.
The book, however, is well structured, keeping the interest of the reader on the topics of International Law and giving information on every topic to search further on in other sources.
I hope that the book will have translation to other languages.

Time for an 8th Edition?

Akehurst's Modern Introduction to International Law provides a sound basis for understanding the United Nations, treaties, and international law. The only drawback to the book is that the material is becoming somewaht dated with its 1997 copyright.

The book has gone through a number of reprints in between 1998 and 2004 leading me to suggest a 8th edition for 2006. The book

provided an academic premier for a course in Space Law. I enjoyed the Latin legal terms spread throughout the text. I do recommend that the reader have some prior knowledge of the law to more fully appreciate the text.

Great Series

When I'm looking at a new book to try there are some things I look for:

Writing: The writing is wonderfully paced. There is always somethings going on, yet there are just enough breaks for practice, planning, and explanations that you don't feel that the entire book takes place in a span of a few crazy hours. The editing is good, and I don't remember ever being pulled form the story due to typos or lost thoughts (I'm sure there are typos, but nothing stuck out or repeated in a way I noticed).

Main Character: Hector is great. His shyness and inability to speak to others is truly debilitating, and yet his conversations in his head with Garovel have all the witty banter of a great buddy-cop movie. It's funny to see him confident in battle, and then turn into a bumbling stutterer or silent statue when things calms down.

Development: For many stories, it seems that the main character is set up as "The One" and while there are challenges, you can always count on him whipping out some new ability to save the day. Not so with this story. Hector fails almost as often as he succeeds, and while he does learn new tricks, they are rarely show-stoppers or unbeatable attacks. There is also a good amount of training time to account for the growth.

Overall: I would suggest this book for anyone who loves a nice twist on standard superhero or modern supernatural genre. The fantasy setting makes it seem more like an alternate Now than a vastly different world (no flying cars, or elven accountants or anything)
I look forward to reading the rest of the series, and am only disappointed that there are not more books finished.

If you liked it before

Continuation of the previous book, with the same humor and writing. If you liked it before, you'll probably like this one as well. Only bad thing I can really say about it, is that the main character hasn't changed much, personality wise. He does improve a bit, but his personality is still rather shy.

Like the first volume, it's still a recommendation.

Excellent web-fiction, action is well written, and characters are layered without awkward or unnecessary exposition. If you enjoy Dark sort of urban fantasy with excellent world building and great action then this book is for you. Great read, I highly recommend it.

About the Author
Gertraud Goodwin was born in Germany in 1951. In her first career, she worked as an surgery nurse at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh. Her sculpture training at the Alanus-Kunsthochschule near Bonn (1976–1979) was followed by training in sculpture therapy. In 1982, she moved to England, where she taught at the Tobias School of Art in East Grinstead and at Emerson College, Forest Row, as well as working with graphics. In 1987 she started to teach sculpture and graphics in her own studio. Gertraud Goodwin has exhibited in galleries in London, Brighton, Italy, Germany, and Switzerland.

Soooo many amazing books

Scornfully Yours - the beginning of the series, we're introduced to Emma, Carter and Bass .. not to mention the rest of the gang. OMG the angst in this book had me reeling for more.

Scornfully Hers - Carter's novella that shows his point of view through the beginning of his and Emma's relationship. This is the book that sold me on Carter and his love for her. THIS book is what puts Carter Mason as my #2 book boyfriend, only coming in second to Travis Maddox.

Frayed - ummmmm MONSTER BOSS .. I shouldn't have to say more, but Taylor and Trista steal the show in this one. The internal conflict with Trista is crazy and the fact that Taylor tries to pull her from this funk is heartwarming and sexy as hell at the same time.

Blasphemous - This story continues the love triangle that is Bass/Carter/Emma ... Emma's cast in a movie and is single ... where is her heart going to lie .. who will steal the show .. who will come out the victor ... NOPE, not this one .. not yet guys!!!

Scorned - My FAVORITE out of this series .. This is the story of Lindsey and Dimi (the Greek sex pistol that's cast in the movie that Emma stars in) ... There is NOTHING sexier than Dimi and his strength. He fights for his love and she resists each and every time she can .. is it because of Brody ?!?! you're going to have to read to find out!!

Undeniably Yours - Bass freakin Cole and his novella, telling his POV during his relationship with Emma. I'm not a huge Bass Cole fan BUT this novella really opened my eyes to their relationship .. I'm still all for Carter, but I can see a future for Emma and Bass with this book .. talk about the confusion

Fixated On You - Ohhhh you're wanting a happily ever after for Emma ?!?! THIS IS YOUR BOOK .. finally the choice is made and the girl gets the guy ... GAWD you're going to have a rough road to happiness but when you finally get there, the heavens open and the angels rejoice ..

PAMELA ANN you kill me a little more with each book .. I love you so hard it's unreal. I'm so pumped for whatever you have to throw out there for us next!!!

By So many books, so little time
WTF?!? This is the first and LAST book I buy from this author. I can handle angst. I can handle misery. I can't believe how much of that was in this series. Everytime I thought Emma would get her HEA, boom! something else comes along and messes it up. I understand that a little sorrow makes the happy parts seem all the better, but really? This was way too much. I couldn't finish it. I just couldn't. Not only that, I returned it for a refund. It had promise, but by Emma's 3rd story, I had had enough. After reading as much as I did, the ONLY female character I liked was Trista. She actually stayed totally true to herself, and Taylor (her bf) was the most awesome of all the guys.

I don't recommend this to anyone unless they're seriously into misery and discontent..

This series made me feel TORN

At times I wanted to rip someone's head off. Talk about frustrating, oh my gosh, I just wanted to jump up and down and scream...mostly at Emma, well, all of the women...not to mention Carter...guy can't keep it in his pants for 5 minutes, then suddenly we are supposed to buy that he can do it for years...BS!!!
