About the Author
Luc Ferry has taught at the Sorbonne and at the University of Caen and is the former Minister of Youth, National Education, and Research in the French government. A stunning and important book

Luc Ferry's What Is the Good Life? asks whether it is possible to come to a transcendent understanding of the good life in a world that regards success largely in terms of money and prestige. The answer is yes; but the reasons are what make the book so interesting. Ferry takes the reader through some of the most perplexing philosophical dilemmas regarding the good life--from the seeming contradictions in Nietzsche, to the question of free will in Stoic philosophy, to the relation between Greek philosophy and Christianity, and onward. The book is at once scholarly and spiritual; it provides excellent background and commentary while addressing questions that affect every life.

I have read the book twice now, and both times I have emerged with my mind singing. It is not breezy reading, but it is well within the grasp of the layperson. One must take time with it and sometimes pause to reread a passage. It is worth the effort. There are wonderful quotes from philosophy and literature--works that I want to read or reread in full. The quotes of Epictetus, Donne, and Hugo are among my favorites.

The minor points along the way are as interesting and compelling as the overall argument. For instance, on page 13, Ferry points out that while jealousy has always existed, modern-day envy is deeply affected by our lack of a sense of the "beyond." That is, there is no reparation for our failures; if we see someone doing better, we take this as a judgment on ourselves. There is no later; we believe we are supposed to have a better life right away, and the only place we can find it is "where it's happening." I have seen evidence of this in our schools, whose success is measured by their immediate results, and on the Internet, where great value is placed on minute-to-minute updates and being in on "the latest."

The book does not call for a return to religion or philosophy of the past; instead, it points to a view that is both responsive to the modern world and resonant with insights that have retained their meaning over the centuries. But I will not give away the ending.

One of the signs of an excellent book (especially on a subject like philosophy) is that it takes you to other books. I found the Epictetus quotes so striking that I started reading Epictetus's Discourses. I am very glad that I did.

A powerful analysis of what the "good life" looks like from a totally secular point of view. A never clearer alternative to the long standing religious imagination of the good life. It fails but not because Ferry has not worked diligently at his task.

My husband and I are good readers and we love books and philosophy. I heard great things about the author, but we both could not pass through the second chapter. Way to complicate and hard reading.

About the Author
Dr. Kurtz has been researching ultra-high molecular weight polyehtylene(UHMWPE) for use in orthopedics for over 10 years. He has published dozens of papers and several book chapters related to UHMWPE used in joint replacement. He has pioneered the development of new test methods for the material in orthopedics. Dr. Kurtz has authored national and international standards for medical upgrade UHMWPE. As a principle engineer at Exponent, an international engineering and scientific consulting company, his research on UHMWPE is supported by several major orthopedic manufacturers. He has funding from the National Institutes for Health to stdy UHMWPE changes after implanatation in the body, as well as to develop new computer-based tools to predict the performance of new UHMWPE materials. Dr. Kurtz is the Director of an orthopedic implant retrieval program in Philadelphia which is affiliated with Drexel University and Thomas Jefferson University. He teaches classes on the performance of orthopedic polymers (including UHMWPE) at Drexel, Temple, and Princeton Universities.

Great resource.

This is a great sourcebook about the history, variety and current use of polyethylene in total joint replacements. It is well researched, written and presented. It covers joints other than hips and knees and includes a good historical overview, including metal-on-metal and other lesser used polymers.

This little book is remarkable. I spent a month with it. It is a compact, scholarly, and informative introduction to a very important and complex subject. Father Brown apologizes neither for his faith nor for the generally unblinking, critical scholarship he applies to to his subject. This book is a treasure for Christians who seek to love the Lord their God with all their minds.

When Father Brown died (too soon!) in 1998 at the age of 70, his NY Times obituary appreciatively noted that his "scholarly career spanned four decades... [and that he was] the author of nearly 40 books, many of them commentaries on the New Testament... In the contentious field of biblical studies, which ranges from biblical literalists to those who have tried to strip down the New Testament texts to seek out a historical figure of Jesus, Father Brown was regarded as a centrist, with a reputation as a man of the church and a rigorous, exacting scholar whose work had to be reckoned with."

The book under review, written several years, before his death, displays his customary clarity and execution of purpose. And his purpose is straightforward. "Christian believers..., if they have not wrestled in some mature way with the identity of Jesus, are in danger of constructing a fictional Jesus and attempting to get guidance from him... They should be offered the opportunity to see that a nonliteral approach to the NT does not necessarily destroy or undermine classic Christian beliefs." (p. vi)

Pope Francis has said: "I don't have all the answers. I don't even have all the questions. I always think of new questions, and there are always new questions coming forward." Father Brown raises many of the important 20th-century Christological questions and supplies well-thought-out and pellucid answers. For instance: "How then can one be divine and human at the same time?" (p. 25) The astute answer: "Realistically, it may well be that most Christians tolerate [that word is emphasized in the original] only as much humanity as they deem consonant with their view of the divinity... There are believers,,, [who] cannot visualize [Jesus] as sometimes tired, testy, indistinguishable in a crowd, treated as a fanatic and a rabble-rouser." (p. 27) So where does one go with questions about what Jesus as a human knew and when and to what degree he knew it? Father Brown sums up the matter: "Actually the theological climate has changed and very prominent Roman Catholic theologians [including Joseph Ratzinger] now allow for limitations in Jesus' knowledge." (p. 29)

Ronald Witherup was provincial of the Society of St. Sulpice, a fellowship of priests who teach in seminaries, of which Father Brown was a member. His assessment, which follows, remains true today and is likely to stand for some time. "His impact is still going to be widely felt, but his presence will be missed." Father Brown's reputation is cemented as a premier figure of 20th-century Scriptural scholarship.

True Evangelism--Not Human Manipulation

Lewis Sperry Chafer was a theologian, author, andthe founder of Dallas Theological Seminary. Several other books I am reading now are rather overweight considering their contents but this volume is slim, only 100 small pages, and filled with ideas to savor.

The previous reviewer is correct in that when this book was originally published it received many scathing reviews from Christians. Why? Because Chafer take aim at manipulative forms of evangelism in the first chapter of his book called "False Forces in Evangelism. Chafer believes that only God changes peoples hearts and that it is harmful for Christian ministers to try to manipulate people into "coverting." He defend his views from the Scripture and does so skillfully yet briefly. Chafer particularly criticizes meetings which try to manipulate people into coming forward and preaching which make it seem as if salvation is dependent upon raising your hand in a meeting or kneeling at the altar. He also criticizes the view that evangelism is only for certain people, i.e. so-called "evangelists", and that it is best done only a specific season, the "revival"

Chapter Two, "Salvation: The Objective in Evangelism," is theologically rich. Recognizing that the objective of evangelism is salvation, Chafer explores the elements of salvation. He speaks of salvation in "three tenses" on p. 29, "The believer was saved from condemnation . . . he is being saved from the habit and power of sin . . . and he will be saved from the presence of sin" and focuses mainly on the "first tense." I appreciated his seven-part summary of the changes that occur immediately a person comes to Christ, especially his reminder that one who believes is now clothed with the righteousness of God. Without such a reminder, it is easy to forget the real object of evangelism is not a simple conversation but salvation.

Chapter Three, "Conviction by the Spirit," explores the central importance of the Holy Spirit in evangelism. All Christians whom I know acknowledge the necessity of the conviction of the Holy Spirit, but few of us take time to meditate on that truth. This chapter emphasizes how foolish the gospel is to an unbeliever and how impossible it is for him to belief through his own power. Chafer does not write to discourage people from attempting evangelism but to encourage them not to neglect their own spriritual lives and to rely on the Holy Spirit's conviction rather than their own persuasive skills.

Chafer only gets better in Chapter Four, "The Prayer of Intercession." He is refreshingly scriptural and God-centered in its approach to prayer. His brief descriptions of the privileges given to the people of God to approach him in prayer for the sake of other people were inspiring to me.

The idea of "intercession" is carried on in Chapter Five, "Suffering With Christ." Chafer develops the idea that we can share in the ministry of Christ by sharing in his sufferings. I thought it was helpful to be reminded that suffering is not an pointless part of true evangelism. Sharing the gospel is not making a sale or winning an argument but doing my utmost to bring the benefits of the suffering of Christ to a lost world, regardless of whether that brings suffering to myself or not.

This book wouldn't be complete without its final chapter "Cleansing of the Priests." Those who go out as representatives of Christ cannot be effective in intercessory prayer, in sensitivity to the Holy Spirit, in explaining the gospel without first being in a right relationship with Christ. I believe this is why the New Testament epistles say little about going out and "doing evangelism" but much about developing a pure and holy community and being conformed to the image of Christ. People who are living in sin are not able to be effective evangelists and should not be pushed to do so.

In short, this book is a short but Scripturally rich exploration of evangelism. I was afraid it might be a tract trying to harangue people into going out and "doing" evangelism. Instead, I found a deeply Scriptural, theologically deep, yet beautifully brief description of the nature of true evangelism. True evangelism is God-centered and God-directed. True evangelism is not a burden but a joyful product of service to Christ.

Very good; balanced and honest...

I'm reading this as part of my evangelism class at DTS, and I really enjoy it. It's systematic and rational. I especially appreciate the way Chafer cites the 'evangelism career path' that has infected the thinking of so many in this century.

The review below cites only revenue loss as evidence for this book's impotence; but when has God ever needed the bottom line as evidence of His blessing on a work?

About the Author

Spencer E. Cahill (1949-2006) was Professor of Sociology at the University of South Florida. The author or editor of four books and numerous articles, he was also editor of Social Psychology Quarterly; associate editor of Symbolic Interaction; and president of the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction.

Kent Sandstrom is Professor of Sociology and Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at North Dakota State University. The recipient of numerous teaching and research awards, he is the co-editor of the Journal of Contemporary Ethnography and author of several books, including Symbols, Selves, and Social Reality, Fourth Edition (OUP, 2013).

Carissa Froyum is Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Northern Iowa. She is deputy editor of the Journal of Contemporary Ethnography and recipient of the 2011 University Book and Supply Outstanding Teaching Award.

All of this in one book? Yep!

Oh MY! This is a book for book lovers, collectors, book historians, researchers and those who enjoy a good story. Everyone seems to have written a summary of the plot, so I won't. What you will find here is a mystery, a love story, some book history, and chances are good you will not work out the whodunit until the very end of the book. (Or even when it was done!!) Lovett surely did his research for this story - and that just adds to making the story so readable. It does ring true -- as though these things could indeed have happened. I did find some problems -- at least for me. The final solution does seem a bit contrived, although by that time the reader really doesn't mind. And although Lovett generously thanks his editor, I do wish that reliance on spell checkers was not used for quality books. Folks, 'I' is not a proper substitute for 'a'. No matter what some software will tell you, please read the manuscript. This is a marvelous read for a summer afternoon. And likely for a winter day -- or when Autumn leaves fall -- oh I did enjoy this book and hope you will as well.

A good read mired with predictable plot twists and excessive coincidences

The Bookman's Tale: A Novel of Obsession is a lot of things. It's a love story, mystery, thriller, all combined into one book. Peter Byerly, a socially awkward antiquarian book seller, is still reeling from the death of his beloved wife, Amanda. To escape, he goes to England, hoping to rejoin life by immersing himself in his first love, books. He happens to come across a watercolor portrait of Amanda while browsing through an old book. The thing of it is, though, is that the painting was done a hundred years prior. Driven by obsession, he steals the picture and finds himself in pursuit of who BB (the artist) and the person in the painting are, while stumbling upon a manuscript that could very well prove that Shakespeare actually wrote his plays.

This book had some pretty good selling points for me. Obsession? Bibliophila? SOLD! I found it to be well written and really interesting. Lovett draws from his own personal experience in the antiquarian book business, and it is very clear that he knows his subject matter. The descriptions of how books are restored and about forgery are in depth and very comprehensible to someone that has no idea about any of that stuff. I really liked how he drew his inspiration from actual documents (such as Shakespeare's Pandosto) and people, yet do not forget that this is primarily fiction.

The story shifts between three different stories: present day (or rather, the 1990s), the mid 1980s (Peter and Amanda's love story), and the early 1600s-late 1800s (the story of the Pandosto manuscript, the "Holy Grail" of English literature). The time periods are easily discernable as they are all labeled before it moves into that particular segment. While well written, I found that because of so many story lines, when one would peak, it would shift to another time period where something slow may be going on. Or, it would stop in the middle of something captivating, and shift to another story. I'm not a fan of that kind of device. It's not nearly as bad as a cliffhanger ending, but still....

While I enjoy plot twists, the author is excessive with them, and most of them are pretty predictable. The same goes with the coincidences. There are too many coincidences to be credible, and I felt that because of them, it was kind of a lazy attempt to wrap everything up neatly with a big, pretty bow.

The love story between Amanda and Peter is very sweet and believable, but I can't really say that I connected or felt anything for them. As far as the Shakespeare angle, I've never been too interested in the theories that his works were actually written by others; that is a very big part in this book.

Interesting in premise and execution, but because of the predictability and excess concurrences, I wasn't completely in love with The Bookman's Tale. That's not to say that I wouldn't recommend it, but it's definitely for people who are fascinated with the antique book trade and William Shakespeare.

This bibliographic detective story was a delight that kept me up into the wee small hours

Our protagonist, Peter Byerly, is a young bookseller who caught the bibliophile bug at (the fictional) Ridgefield University in North Carolina. A scholarship boy with crippling shyness, his preferred work/study job was in the library, because he wouldn't have to interact with anyone. And yet that is where he meets the two great loves of his life: rare books and Amanda.

The story actually begins with Peter recently widowed, Amanda having died suddenly after they'd been married only six years. Heartbroken, Peter has fled North Carolina for the cottage in Kingham, Oxfordshire, England that he and Amanda had bought the year before.

Now, months later, Peter decides slowly to return to his antiquarian book hunter/seller work. In Hay-on-Wye, the renowned city of bookshops in Wales, he discovers a portrait of Amanda slipped inside an old volume. But it can't be Amanda, because this is a Victorian-era portrait. The discover electrifies Peter. He must find out where this portrait came from.

A request to evaluate a local Kingham resident's manor-house collection of antiquarian books leads Peter on a quest for what he calls the Holy Grail: proof that William Shakespeare really was the author of all those plays and sonnets, rather than Marlowe, de Vere, Bacon or one of the other better-educated writers often claimed to be the more likely source.

Peter's two quests become a thrilling adventure, especially for readers fascinated by old books and their travels through time and the lives of their owners. Each chapter tells one of three stories: Peter's modern-day (1995) pursuits, his life with Amanda and the chequered past of the grail book. The three yarns wind around each other skillfully, each part adding extra richness to the others, then converging in a deliciously satisfying way.

When I turned the last page of The Bookman's Tale, I was shocked to see it was 1:30am. Now it's nearly 3:00am and I'm savoring more time with the book as I write this review. I'm a morning person; I'm usually asleep before 11:00pm and I can't remember the last time I've been up past midnight. But it never occurred to me to think about the time while reading this tremendously enjoyable bibliographic detective story. I'm not going to claim it's high art, and hard-core crime fiction readers will probably figure out the whodunnit side of the tale fairly early on, but it's terrific, old-fashioned entertainment.
