A classic, essential reading if a bit dated

Barbour's book is essential reading for anyone wanting a comprehensive overview of historical temperaments, from the early Greeks to the twentieth century. That said, Barbour wrote from the vantage point of someone firmly believing that equal temperament is the ultimate expression of temperament, so the reader is left to interpret the contents, absorb what's good and toss out what's not so useful. Barbour cites many sources, so the book makes a decent bibliogrphy for further study. In fact, having read the book the reader should indeed go to the sources and make his own interpretation of the sources.
This book can be a tough read for someone not mathematically inclined - the analysis of every temperament is mathematically-based, and little reference is given to the needs of musicians. Additionally, a great deal of the book's ink is devoted to theoretical temperaments that either are not useable or have never found a use, so the reader is inclined to skip pages unless purely theoretical temperaments are of interest.
While this book is essential reading, there are several other contemporary writers on tuning and temperaments. Highly recommended is Mark Lindley's entry on the subject in the New Grove's. For a valuable polemic on temperaments and harmony, read Ross Duffin's recent "How Equal Temperament Ruined Harmony (and Why You Should Care)", available at Amazon.com.

Not "obsolete" or "useless" at all

Although I bought a copy approximately seven years ago, and first saw this book in a hardcover edition decades ago, I have not seen fit to write an actual review until now. And this mainly as a rebuttal to Claudio Di Veroli's harshly negative review.

First of all, I think it is eminently prejudicial for anyone reviewing a book not to disclose any interests he might have in other books on related topics. Di Veroli does not disclose his authorship of a book until he responds to a comment on his review, and this response to a comment is not visible to people just looking at his review unless they take the additional step of clicking to view comments. I am not going to violate my own ethics here -- I have myself written a book on musical scales, available on Amazon. (And I suppose a negative review that book got, written by a person who has coauthored research papers with the author of a rival book, prompted my feelings about such disclosures.)

To describe any book that presents historical data -- in this case, on tunings and temperaments from Greek days till the advent of equal temperament -- as "obsolete" is laughable. The book is a valuable reference on the ways instruments were tuned in past centuries, and I certainly did not consider it "useless," though in my own book I did not choose to provide such a listing -- in fact, readers of my book interested in such information are referred to Barbour's book.

Yes, I agree with Di Veroli that Barbour is opinionated in favor of equal temperament. Di Veroli says, "Barbour's purported steady evolution towards equal temperament, and his thesis that it is the only system worth tuning to, are nowadays not just erronous, but hilarious." Yet there ARE people who would agree with the idea that equal temperament "is the only system worth tuning to," despite Di Veroli's opinion. [And, of course, there are books maintaining the exact opposite, such as "How Equal Temperament Ruined Harmony (and Why You Should Care)" by Ross W. Duffin.] What is really the important point is that equal temperament has its advantages, and also its disadvantages, and a fair-minded approach would be to provide both -- but very few people (among those who have taken an interest in the subject) are truly neutral on this question.

What Barbour's book is important for is not his "purported steady evolution towards equal temperament" but his descriptions of tunings and temperaments used in the past, and I know of no other book that has the detail that Barbour provides. Di Veroli would (if I understand his review correctly) want pitches given more precisely than integer cents, but in fact very few people's hearing is so precise that even an error of a few cents is a significant one. (I have, in fact, a preference for other measures than cents, but this is my preference, and I do not let it downgrade my opinion of the book.)

This is hardly a perfect book on the subject, but it is far better than Di Veroli rates it in his review. And hopefully, people will not, by that review, be dissuaded from buying what is truly an important book.

A standard work, it should be reprinted

This book is a standard source on scales and temeraments, and their history. It compares and contrasts Pythagorean tuning, just intonation, meantone, irregular temperaments, and finally equal temperament. Barbour displays a strong predisposition towards twelve tone equal temperament in this work, and interprets the history of scales and temperaments as an inexorable march towards equal temperament.
If you are a publishing company looking for something to reprint, this is a classic.

At age 21, Yves St. Laurent took over as head of the prestigious House of Dior; at age 25, he opened his own firm; and after a lifetime of achievement, he has now announced his upcoming retirement. To mark this event, these books are being published in conjunction with 5, avenue Marceau, a documentary on his incredible 40-year career. LIFE photographer Boulat offers a photomontage of the young St. Laurent in his first year as an independent designer, while Teboul (the director of the documentary) jumps ahead to focus on the step-by-step operations of putting together the show for his Spring 2002 line. To his credit, Teboul does provide some background information on the designer, including childhood photos, a biographical chronology, reproductions of early newspaper clippings (from the scrapbooks of St. Laurent's mother), a complete checklist of his major shows, and four pages of notable St. Laurent quotes. Nonetheless, except for the childhood photos, neither the people nor the activities in any of the pictures are identified. (Perhaps they will be in the documentary.) The publisher describes Teboul's as the "definitive volume," but in fact neither book sheds much light on St. Laurent's life or career. The hundreds of photos are fun to look through (especially when they convey the energy and oftentimes frantic pace of putting together a show), but both books disappoint for lack of comprehensive documentation of this important designer's work. Not the definitive look at the universe of YSL

Though the producers and editors of this book have obviously taken great care and reverence in assembling the images seen in this hefty Rizzoli hardcover edition, it is nonetheless lacking.
There is an eight-page, albeit in very-large typeface, essay extolling the philosophy behind the decades of YSL's influence and visions of modern fashion, as well as journal entries in Yves Saint Laurent's own handwriting that are written mostly in French. There are several famous quotes from him: among them the most famous of all "there is nothing more beautiful than a naked body."
The photographs number in the hundreds, though only a handful of family photographs from YSL's childhood in Oran, Algeria are captioned with names. Otherwise, the documentary's images shot mostly in the atelier at 5 avenue Marceau are without caption or description, though you can discern the sense of creativity and endless discussion that is the process of the haute couture. The masterpieces of tailleur (suits) and flou (dresses) are often one-of-a-kind. Their numbers are usually limited to one or two copies, so the 2000 or so women who can afford the prices are not likely to see someone else wearing that same opera coat or evening gown which ends up photographed in the society pages of Paris and New York among other places. If you are paying $50,000 for a hand-embroidered Lesage suit jacket, you don't want to see it on the shoulders of a half-dozen of your fellow couture followers. Ca marche pas!
Most interestingly the editors did not include many quotes from some of Saint Laurent's inner circle, except for a small contribution from his life and business partner, Pierre Berge. There is one short blurb from Catherine Deneuve, but no words from Loulou de la Falaise or Betty Catroux, or even Marie Munoz, directrice of the YSL atelier for years. There are some very old press clippings from the 50s and 60s when YSL was hitting the peaks of creativity, but very little from the pinnacle of his career, which would be most of the 1970s. In the 70s we witnessed some of the greatest moments in fashion history with the Chinese and Russian collections that set the trends for womens' wear for years after the clothes were shown in Paris.
The book is full of images, but short on text. For those who are unfamiliar with all the innovations introduced for women's clothing, their number is second only to that of those brought forth by Coco Chanel. Saint Laurent created the women's pantsuit, the "smoking" or women's tuxedo, the trenchcoat, the safari look, khaki, the list goes on and on. Seeing the documentary would be more than helpful, as it would fill in many of the gaps.
A beautiful book that leaves you only wanting much more...

Who is this book for?

O.k. first, let me say, it's my own fault. With picture books it's best to have a look to see if you really want to spend the $. I didn't. I made an assumption that with YSL retiring this would be a retrospective of his glorious career. Not so. Fuzzy, boring, behind the scenes pictures of people at work in his atelier. Very few dresses and those shown aren't shown well. All in all a disappointment.

More than the man

If you are looking for a book about the designer YSL look somewhere else. If however you are interested in the flow of fashion design as done by YSL then this is a wonderful creation. To me it feels like a work of gratitude to all those involved behind the YSL name.

Trauma and the Soul

We are so fortunate to have someone willing to write about the deepest aspects of the psyche and to what depths it will go to attempt to heal itself. Donald Kalsched truly understands these deep spiritual pockets of the unconscious and to what lengths the unconscious will struggle to avoid the grips of terrified "otherness". I am happy to know that Kalsched now believes that the Protector/Persecutor is now educable and that trauma is not always committed to the grips of anti-relatedness. Kalsched goes to great lengths to explain to the reader in theory, fairytale, and psychoanalytic work how the psychic wounds that occur very early in life can actually heal themselves through the "integrative energies" of the of unconscious. This book combines both Jungian depth psychotherapy and the sacred spiritualness of the traumatized soul. This book embraces Dante's guided descent into the inferno, the role of the clinician as guide and container, Jungian theory and the integration of the dismembered soul that is able to reach wholeness on the other side.

The Inner World of Trauma is one of my favorite books, for it captures the nuances and depths of the psyche's attempt to find a place to belong in the context of interpersonal trauma. With Trauma and the Soul, Kalsched expands the discussion to include the transformational and spiritual nature of the psychotherapeutic relationship and how healing and integration come about through a shared journey. There are many beautiful passages in this book that will bring tears of recognition for those who know trauma deeply and who have entered a portal to the sacred as a consequence.

Don't waste your money.

It's easy to see why the author could not get anyone to publish this. With all the wide spacing and blank pages it could have been a 20 page booklet. It appears her infatuation with Rammstein lead singer Till Lindemann has led her to write a book of her conjectured poetic prose to make Rammstein's lyrics into songs with English lyrics that rhyme. The original German lyrics are not even listed in the book. Buy a book like "German made Simple" and actually learn some German words.This book teaches you nothing and is extremely overpriced. Rammstein's lyrics stand on their own.

My only complaint is that all of their songs aren't in here.The translations convey a much better understanding of what the original songs in German are like than most of the straight word for word translations on the Internet.A friend and fellow Rammstein fan got me this for Christmas and I absolutely love it so far.A must have for any English speaking fans of Rammstein.
Please do the Messer translations!I have a copy and tried myself but didn't get very far using just an English-German dictionary.I'll be one of the first in line to buy it.

Great Book Idea

I found this book days after joking with my hubby that I needed a "Rammstein German" book (as opposed to the typical Learn German kind of book). So glad this was written, but it left me wanting more. I would really like to see the writer do a LBRB # 2 and do more song interpretations, which really brought the translations to life for me. Great idea by the author .
