Gr 4-6-Each title in this engaging series is actually two books in one, right down to having two front covers and two indexes. One half of each volume describes events, people, and ideologies that represent one side's view of a major historical event or period. The other half recounts the opposing side's position. Using concise, well-researched content, this approach engages critical-thinking skills by encouraging students to look at issues from a variety of perspectives. For example, in Expansion the "Settlers' Perspective" is that "they would be settling the land and improving it both for themselves and future generations." In contrast, the "American Indian Perspective" is that "They felt cheated by the U.S. government and angry over how they were treated." Archival photographs and reproductions, in both color and black and white, effectively illustrate the texts, and sidebars offer profiles of important figures and other relevant information. About the Author
Michael Burgan has written numerous books for children and young adults during his nearly 20 years as a freelance writer. Many of his books have focused on U.S. history, geography, and the lives of world leaders. He has also written fiction and adapted classic novels. Michael has won several awards for his writing, and his graphic novel version of the classic tale Frankenstein (Stone Arch Books) was a Junior Library Guild selection. Michael has also worked as an editor at Weekly Reader, the classroom news magazine used in schools across the United States. Michael graduated from the University of Connecticut with a bachelor’s degree in history. When not writing for kids, he enjoys writing plays, and his works have been staged across the United States. He lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with his cat, Callie.

Big Michael Burgan fans

We are big fans of Michael Burgan's GRAPHIC HISTORY books, and when we found this book at our library, the kids started fighting about who got to check it out. Really!
The book does not disappoint, although it does not present very much new information. It does offer a short, readable history of the American Revolution from two perspectives: Patriot and British. Events in Boston, 1770: massacre or riot? Taxing the colonies: reasonable or unjust?
Children over 3rd grade can manage the vocabulary independently. The fun is that you read one side, then flip the book to read the other perspective. We are in a golden age of children's book publishing. Lots of color illustrations and informative biographical details. Some vocabulary includes: confident, suffered, casualties, sharpshooters, desperate, artillery, rebel, reinforcement, aide, alliance, treaty.

Great for teaching perspective

In my 5th grade class we learn about the American Revolution but I find it hard to get the students to relate to the British perspective. This book is short, gives students a chance to see the war from both sides and has nice pictures to go along with all the information in the text. Great book for any history buff.

I LOVE this book!!!! This has been a fantastic book to use as a textbook for my middle schoolers. I love it because it's concise, well worded, and gives both main perspectives to the American Revolution, which teaching middle school students to see more than one perspective is incredibly important. I'm so thankful for this book! I've learned a ton and my students are enjoying it. I can't wait to use the other books in this series.
