Geoffrey Hosking has been Professor of Russian History at the School of Slavonic Studies, University of London, since 1984. He is the author of the award-winning 'History of the Soviet Union' for Fontana Press. tediously dull writing and uninteresting layout

A required textbook for my kid's college class. I have an MBA and am usually interested in anything having to do with business. I thumbed through this very expensive book and gratefully closed it after slogging through a few numbing pages. If you're a business teacher thinking about using it for a class, do the world a favor, put your copy out of its misery and send it to goodwills.

About the Author

Dr. Liang earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Okalahoma in 1991, and an MS and BS in Computer Science from Fudan University in Shanghai, China, in 1986 and 1983. Prior to joining Armstrong, he was an associate professor in computer science at Purdue University in Fort Wayne, where he twice received the Excellence in Research award.

Dr. Liang was trained in theoretical computer science. He was active in graph algorithms from 1990 to 1995 and published more than ten papers in several established journals such as SIAM Journal on Computing, Discrete Applied Mathematics, Acta Informatics, and Information Processing Letters. Since 1996, he has devoted to writing texts and published more than thirty books with Prentice Hall. His popular computer science texts are widely adopted in the world.

Dr. Liang was elected a Java Champion in 2005 by Sun Microsystems. He has given lectures on Java internationally.

The full potential of Java in one textbook

I've been programming with Java for a while now, and I can't stress how useful this textbook has been for me. If you're looking forward to grasp the full potential of Java, I definitely recommend this textbook over any other. When you purchase a new copy, you will also receive online access and more chapters. Just keep in mind that some chapters are exclusively on the web only.

Programming Made Now So Hard

It came to my house really quick about within 2 days. It comes with many chapters about general programming and advanced but the beginning chapters give you a really good foundation of how to program and what are terms and as well of what's java and other programming languages. Without this book I wouldn't have learn so much about making a program. This is too much information for a great value!

This book is much, much more than an intro to Java. It covers important libraries like the JavaFX (covered extensively) as well as persistence and messaging. It's also packed with real computer science material. There's enough to qualify the book as an undergraduate data structures textbook and, with the sections on time-complexity analysis and graphing, half of an analysis of algorithms course.

In short, if you read this book and successfully navigate some of the end of chapter questions, you will have thoroughly learned Java, be competent at writing moderate sized Java programs requiring complex concepts, and earned a third of your undergraduate computer science degree.

The changing views about the origin of the craters mark an important paradigm shift in the Earth sciences, from an Earth-centric approach to a planetary perspective that acknowledged Earth’s place in the wider cosmos. Drawing on a range of printed sources, detailed archival material, letters, personal notes, and interviews with veterans of Ries research, Martina KÃ¶lbl-Ebert provides a detailed reconstruction, not only of the historical sequence of events throughout the twentieth century, but also of the personal thoughts, emotions and motives of the scientists involved and the social context of their research. She shows that there was a sudden reconnection of German researchers with the international scientific community, particularly with more progressive American researchers, after some twenty-five years of scientific isolation during the build-up to WWII and its aftermath. This reconnection brought about not only a new view of geoscience, but also saved German geology from self-sufficiency and patriotic arrogance by integrating it in an interdisciplinary and international framework. In so doing this book sheds much valuable light on an under-explored but crucial development in the way we understand Earth’s history, as well as the way that science functioned during times of conflict.

An excellent review of the history of impact crater research in Germany from its early (pre-20th century) beginnings until the modern era, with a focus on the Nordlinger Ries and Steinheim Basin. The book provides a fascinating synopsis of the period from the 1930s to 1970s, as the build-up to WWII and its aftermath created a crucial turning point in German geological thinking influenced by the swiftly changing political and geopolitical climate. It is full of interesting historical anecdotes, from how the staff of the Geological Museum in Munich saved part of its collections from a WWII bombing (under the nose of its fanatical director), to the fanfare and celebrations greeting the arrival of the first moon rock specimens (from the American Apollo lunar missions) in Tubingen in 1969. A wonderful book, of interest for its fresh historical perspectives as much as for its science.
